21.10.17 Tony awarded CA Diploma - Congratulations to Tony Mrozinski, founder and
President of our club, who was presented with a CA Diploma by Quiller Barrett, President
of the CA, in recognition of his outstanding service to croquet and active involvement
in club affairs over a long period. (Photos)
10.10.17 SECF League results 2017 Richard Hilditch has supplied the following results:
Association U League - GGCC =13th of 15 teams
GC Handicap League (West) - GGCC Team A - 2nd and GGCC Team B =9th of 17 teams
GC Level Play League - GGCC 10th of 10 teams
08.10.17 GB GC Squad v GB AC Squad GGCC had pleasure in hosting a ‘friendly’ golf
croquet challenge match between the Great Britain GC and AC squads. At the end of
play on Sunday the final result was GC squad 30 and AC squad 24. The manager thanked
Mike Huxley and the club for the use of the club’s facilities and for the catering.
Mike responded saying the club had been glad to host the event and members had enjoyed
the opportunity to watch such a high standard of play. Report on CA website.
02.09.17 Final U League match of the season The day got off to a rather difficult
start, as two of the Hampstead players were delayed for more than 45 minutes by traffic
problems: changes were made to the pairing for doubles, so that two games were able
to begin with players who had arrived on time by train. The third game got under
way rather later, and – perhaps because of the stresses of travel affecting Hampstead
players - in the morning session, G & G won two of the three games. In the doubles,
Mike Huxley, who had joined the team at the last minute as an emergency stand-in,
completed a straight double peel in the last turn of the match after time had been
called to seal the win, but was unfortunately unable to make the peg-out. Lunch,
kindly provided by Anne Buckingham, was very well received by everyone – and was
accompanied by some excellent wines (a 2005 Chambertin and a 2014 Chianti) very
kindly presented by Rick Weinstein of Hampstead. Unfortunately, the standard of
G & G play in the afternoon could not match the quality of lunch: Hampstead won
3 of the 4 games, and so ended the day with 4 wins out of 7. (AL)
Match result: Guildford & Godalming 3 Hampstead Heath 4
31.08.17 In memory of David West A service to celebrate the life of David West was
held at St Andrew’s Parish Church, Farnham. Several members of our club attended
and shared fond memories of David with Joan and their family and many friends.
23.08.17 Townswomen’s Guild Croquet Day Fifteen teams of two from across mid-Surrey
converged on the club for their annual croquet tournament and were warmly welcomed
by a number of club members. In all 62 games were played with two of the teams managing
to play ten games each before play drew to a close. Although the weather was overcast
it was warm with only a light breeze, ideal conditions for playing croquet and for
the picnic lunch. As afternoon play progressed team ‘Solo +1’ began to draw ahead
and at close of play proved to be the clear winner having won 90% of its games and
so winning the trophy for the third year running. We look forward to welcoming them
back to the club next year.
21.08.17 GGCC semi-final against Watford in the Murphy Shield to read Mike’s report
on the match click on the link below.
Match result: Guildford & Godalming 2 Watford 5
19.08.17 U League match v Surbiton A bright but blustery day at Surbiton saw GGCC
achieve their first win this year in the SECF U League. Andrew played as a last
minute reserve and won both his games. Mark with Audrey won their doubles in the
morning and Audrey notched up another win in the afternoon to secure overall victory.
All games bar one went to time and were relatively close. (IF)
Match result: Guildford & Godalming 4 Surbiton 3
18.08.17 David West
Mike Huxley writes:
"I am deeply saddened to report the loss of one of our members. David West died
on Wednesday. He was much loved by all who knew him for his gentleness, his quiet
sense of humour, his intellect, his conversation and the flashes of accuracy on court
that belied his relatively high handicap.
We extend our profound sympathy to Joan and to all the West family. The world has
lost a real gentleman.”
08.08.17 Godalming Staycation Open Day About 30 visitors many of whom were juniors
were welcomed by members to our fourth Godalming Staycation open afternoon. Our four
lawns were kept busy and visitors were able to enjoy several games of croquet with
club members before heading off to our new clubhouse to sample the refreshments and
home made cakes.
06.08.17 SECF Golf Croquet Teams day 22 teams from 16 clubs competed in the team
singles and doubles on Sunday with GGCC being one of the many clubs to be represented
by two teams. Team 1 achieved 5th place in the doubles but came 20th in the singles.
Team 2 in contrast had better results in the singles than the doubles coming 9th
and 19th respectively.
05.08.17 Derek Cole won the B-Level Golf Croquet Tournament and was presented with
the MARE Cup by Mike Huxley, Tournament Manager. Runner up was John Skuse from Chelmsford.
04.08.17 SECF GC Level Play League v Tunbridge Wells G&GCC were forced to field a
depleted team owing the the absence of our three lowest handicapped players. So
the team’s handicaps were 2, 3, 3 and 4 (total 12). Our visitors arrived with team
handicaps of -1, 1, 1 and 3 (total 4). It seemed that G&G would be in for a tough
fight, and so it proved. Despite many individual games being close (7-5 or 7-6),
most of those were won by Tunbridge Wells, who ran out comfortable winners by 6 matches
to 1. We did have a very agreeable day, though, with pleasant opponents and benefited
from an excellent lunch conjured up by Marjorie. Many thanks, Marjorie. (MAH)
Match result: Guildford & Godalming 1 Tunbridge Wells 6
01.08.17 SECF GC Handicap League Team B faced a strong team in their home match against
Reigate Priory A. The scores for each game were much closer than the overall match
result might suggest but Team B were outplayed on this occasion. The team has one
final match to play in mid-September.
26.07.17 Disappointing results GGCC had two SECF matches on Wednesday: a U League
match at home against Reigate Priory A and a GC Handicap league match for Team A
away to West Wittering.
The U League team experienced steady light rain during the morning with a dry afternoon
except for about 15 minutes of rain and gusty wind; this was sufficient to snap guy
ropes on the Gazebo which performed a triple somersault - by all accounts the most
exciting event of the match. There was some remarkable play from our opponents who
hardly seem to need their bisques!
Match result (U League) Guildford & Godalming 1 Reigate Priory A 6
Match result (Team A) Guildford & Godalming 3 West Wittering 6 Team A
21.07.17 SECF GC Level Play League On Friday GGCC played its second league match
of the season at home to Merton.
Match result: Guildford & Godalming 3 Merton 4
16.07.17 Frank Rendall Trophy Congratulations to Craig Winfield from Cambridge on
winning the B-level Advanced Weekend.
11.07.17 SECF U League In their first match of the season our association team played
a strong Sussex County team at Southwick. Many thanks to Audrey who responded to
an early morning call to stand in and went on to win her morning singles match.
Match result: Guildford & Godalming 2 Sussex County 5
07.07.17 SECF GC Level Play GGCC faced a much stronger Sussex County A at Southwick
Match result: Guildford & Godalming 1 Sussex County A 6
05.07.17 Second match success for Team B Hilary reports that Team B had a successful
trip to Preston Manor for the second of their SECF Handicap League matches. She
commented that it was a close run thing, however we won by 5 games to 4, although
actually having made fewer hoops than the opposition.
Match result: Guildford & Godalming 5 Preston Manor 4
30.06.17 GGCC quarter final success in the Murphy Shield Congratulations to the GGCC
team who now go on to meet either Camerton & Peasedown or Watford in the semi-final.

Cook the runner up.
15.06.17 Longman Cup Our team faced on overwhelming defeat in their away match against

about the result.’
Match result: Guildford & Godalming 0 Woking 7
10.06.17 GC Handicap All England Qualifier congratulations to Jan and Ron who go
through to the regional finals later this year.
08.06.17 Second win of the season In the SECF GC Handicap League Team A, playing
its second match of the season, had a comfortable win at home against Littlehampton
Match result: Guildford & Godalming 8 Littlehamton 1
04.06.17 Opening of the new clubhouse On behalf of all members Mike, Club Chairman,
welcomed local dignitaries and representatives of all the organisations which had
so generously provided grants to enable the club to build its first clubhouse in
the club’s 30 year history. After brief speeches the clubhouse was formally opened
with the ribbon being cut by Stephen and Jennifer, former Club Chairman and Secretary
respectively, who had been instrumental in seeing the project through from conception
to completion. Members and guests then enjoyed a champagne buffet before the start
of an exhibition match between Stephen Mulliner and Harry Fisher. The match was
an excellent demonstration of the skill of these two top class players and was a
highlight for members and guests. The match also attracted members of the public
who joined us for our National Croquet Day open afternoon when they also had the
opportunity to try both association and golf croquet. It was a most successful day
thanks to the efforts of the organisers and the contributions of the members who
provided the buffet. (Photos)
24.05.17 GC Handicap Team A Team A, like Team B, has made a good start to the season
with a home win against Lodsworth.
Match result: Guildford & Godalming 6 Lodsworth 3
22.05.17 GGCC through to Round 2 in the Murphy Shield GGCC won the Round 1 home match
against Hamptworth and will meet Roehampton or Enfield in the next round. A short
report can be found on the CA website. Match result: Guildford & Godalming 6 Hamptworth
21.05.17 SECF AC Team Doubles GGCC was one of the ten clubs competing in the AC Team
Doubles Tournament at Southwick over the weekend. Teams comprising two pairs played
3 rounds on Saturday and 2 on Sunday, a total of 10 games over the weekend. Seven
members represented the club over the two days with the team manager Mark playing
on both days. The team won 5 of its 10 matches. A full report and results will
be published on the SECF website.
19.05.17 Season opens with a win GC Handicap Team B have made a good start to the
2017 season with a home win against West Worthing.
Match result: Guildford & Godalming 5 West Worthing 4
12.05.17 GC Referee - congratulations to Andrea on qualifying as a GC Referee. The
club now has two qualified GC referees (Andrea and Mike) to clarify the interpretation
of the rules and answer any queries you may have. If in doubt please ask....
07.05.17 11th Charity One-ball final raised over £4,000 for charity. 39 players qualified
for the final held at Surbiton and completed a marathon of 9 rounds. Stephen S-M,
GGCC’s qualifier, is to be congratulated on being the runner up once again in such
a strong field.
10.04.17 Anne wins at Hamptworth - Congratulations to Anne Buckingham on winning
the April Hamptworth C Level GC tournament at the weekend. Follow the link to see
pictures of Anne celebrating her success.
09.04.17 One-ball Charity Qualifier On an absolutely amazing spring day (23C and
unbroken sunshine) 7 club members competed for the right to play in the annual Charity
One-Ball final at Surbiton in a few weeks’ time. The competition was all-play-all
so everyone played 6 games. Half way through, there was no clear leader, with several
players having won 2 games out of 3.
The uncertainty continued through the afternoon’s play. With one game left to be
played, Audrey Porter and Mike Thompson were tied on 4 wins out of 6. Crucially,
Stephen Stuart-Matthews was sitting on a record of 4 wins out of 5 and was to feature
in the final game, which he duly won to take the trophy for the 4th consecutive year.
1st Stephen Stuart-Matthews (5/6)
2nd Audrey Porter (4/6)
3rd Mike Thompson (4/6)
Thank you to all the competitors for a fun day and for raising £65 for Parkinsons
UK. Good luck to Stephen for the final. (MAH)
01.04.17 Applewood Wood The new season began with what is rapidly becoming the traditional
first competition of the season, the Applewood Bowl. This year the competition attracted
10 players for the competition which is an interesting mix of One-ball and 14 point
Advanced Level Handicap. The lawns were in immaculate condition having been closely
mown over the two previous days by Arthur with the original mowers. Stephen SM took
the trophy for the second year running and Iain G was the runner up. This was the
first competition when players were able to enjoy the facilities of the new clubhouse
and members were able to have lunch and watch play from the comfort of its shelter.
Our grateful thanks to Arthur for devising this competition, organising and managing
it, preparing the lawns, baking for it, and making and presenting the trophy. Amazingly
he also managed to play in it. Thank you from all the competitors.
01.04.17 Winter GC Leagues The handicap league got off to an enthusiastic start and
although enthusiasm waned as the weather became colder and wetter a fair number of
competitors completed sufficient games to meet the threshold. Congratulations to
Jan H who, in her first season, won the competition with an impressive percentage
of games won. Close on Jan’s heels but not quite close enough was veteran winter
member Mike Ha. Level play competitors were not quite so enthusiastic and all fell
well short of the number of games played to meet the threshold so for the first time
no award has been made. The two who played the most games were Ian F and Gilian N-J
and whilst equal on the percentage of games played Ian just sneaked ahead on percentage
of games won.
17.03.17 One man went to mow The club has acquired an old but serviceable ride-on
mower from our neighbours, Broadwater Golf Club. Many members will be familiar with
this machine, as it is the one used by Adrian Johnson, Director of the Golf Club,
when he did some cutting for us under contract in previous years. Once we have become
familiar with its operation, this mower should reduce the cutting time for our four
lawns from the current 4 hours or more with the pedestrian mower down to 1 hour or
less, leaving more time to do other management jobs - or even play some croquet!
07.02.17 AGM Stephen and Jennifer, the outgoing Chairman and Secretary, were thanked
for all they had done whilst in office. Andrea presented Jennifer with a beautiful
bouquet and Stephen with a gift. Mike Huxley was elected as Chairman, returning to
office after a break, and Hilary Bird as Secretary. Lynn Edge, Roseann Sullivan and
Ron Piper were elected to the committee and Mark Godfrey-James and Andrea Huxley
were re-elected. Tony Mrozinski was confirmed as President.
22.01.17 Solar lighting Work on installing a solar powered system to provide lighting
for the accessible toilet was completed and tested today. The light is operated by
a press button timer switch to ensure that there will be no drain on the battery
by the light accidentally being left on. You have 5 minutes!!

07.12.16 Christmas Lunch The final social occasion of the year, Christmas Lunch,
was held for the first time at The Refectory, Milford. Members enjoyed a relaxed
lunch and were intrigued by the sealed red envelopes each received with the warning
not to open them; staff then explained that if a member returned for a meal in January
and brought their sealed envelope it would be opened when the bill came and would
reveal a discount of 25%, 50% or 100%.
31.10.16 Awards for Arthur Lindley and Stephen Mulliner This week we celebrate the
presentation of awards to two of our members in recognition of their dedication and
commitment to croquet. Both will hopefully inspire all of us to make a contribution
to the club and to croquet in our own way.
CA Diploma - At the recent Croquet Association AGM Arthur was presented
with a CA Diploma by Quiller Barrett, President of the CA, in recognition of his
outstanding service to croquet and active involvement in club affairs over a long
Sport Godalming Outstanding Achievement Award - Stephen received
the very impressive trophy from Rachel Morris, British Paralympic gold medal winner.
The award recognises not only his achievement in winning the 2016 Association Croquet
World Championship but also his wider contribution to croquet both locally and worldwide
over many years.
20.09.16 Murphy Shield Final Andrea reports that sadly we came second in what proved
to be a very close match. It was 3 games all going in to game 7 which was lost on
hoop 13. The team may not have won the trophy but to reach the final and play so
well in just our third year of entering this competition is remarkable. The team
is already looking to next year!
18.09.16 All England Handicap Finals At the weekend Stephen S-M played in the All
England AC Handicap finals at Hamptworth and Ron P ventured to Ryde for the All England
GC Handicap finals. This was Stephen’s third appearance in the finals and Ron’s first,
no mean achievement in only his second year of playing. Congratulations to Stephen
who was runner up in the AC finals, winning 4 out of his 5 matches and only losing
to the winner.
03.09.16 GC A/B -Level Play Tournament Congratulations to Andrea Huxley on winning
the CARA Cup and to the runner up Roger Goldring from Phyllis Court.
03.09.16 The AC All England Handicap Regional Final - 10 players drawn from across
the SE competed at Surbiton over the weekend for a place in the national final. Stephen
S-M and Ian F were once again the club qualifiers for the Regional Final. Congratulations
to Stephen who was successful in qualifying for the All England Final to be held
at Hamptworth over the weekend of 17-18 September.
In recent years a number of players from GGCC have gone through to the All England
Final but no one has succeeded in returning with the trophy since Barry G won it
in 2007. Maybe Stephen will be able to repeat this achievement.
17.08.16 Mid-Surrey Federation of Townswomen’s Guilds We were very pleased to welcome
members of the Federation once again for their annual croquet tournament. Numbers
were down on the amazing turn out last year but there were still 12 teams competing
for the silver trophy. The weather was sunny and hot with only the occasional whisper
of a breeze, the lawns were fast and the shade tempting. The break for lunch was
a welcome respite from the heat then everyone picked up their mallets and play resumed.
Play finished at 3.30 pm so members could enjoy their raffle and conduct some business
whilst the results were calculated and checked. Two teams had gradually drawn ahead
in the afternoon: Just me (Jill) and Noddy (Jean). When play finished Just Me was
a mere percentage point ahead and so for the second year running won the trophy.
We look forward to welcoming them back to the club next year when they will be able
to enjoy our new facilities for the first time.
17.08.16 GC Level Play Team result This was the first match for our team in the
2016 SECF GC Level Play League, an earlier match against another team having been
cancelled by the opposition at the last minute. The match was away to Dulwich who
fielded a strong team with handicaps of -2, -2, 0 and 2 against our 0, 1, 2, and
2. The stronger team won but Mike H reports that we were not disgraced, the day was
enjoyable and the hosts hospitable.
Match result: Guildford & Godalming 2 Dulwich 5
15.08.16 GGCC through to the final of the Murphy Inter-club Shield Guildford & Godalming
beat Merton by a narrow margin in a long, hard fought semi-final match at home to
win through to the final. This is the first time the club has reached the final
and congratulations go to all the players who have contributed to the success in
each round of this national knockout competition. We wish the team every success
in the final when they will be playing Leighton Linslade.
Match result: Guildford & Godalming 4 Merton 3
09.08.16 Godalming Staycation Open Day This was our third open/taster day run in
association with the Godalming Staycation programme. Thirty or so visitors, including
11 juniors, ventured on to the lawns to enjoy games of croquet with club members.
After a couple of hours play both visitors and members took a welcome break to sample
the refreshments and home made cakes.
08.08.16 Golf Croquet It has been a busy time for our golf croquet players. On Saturday
we held an open GC B-level tournament, a qualifier for the national final. Sunday
saw two teams competing in the SECF Golf Croquet Team Singles and Doubles at Southwick,
and on Monday Jan and Ron were playing in the regional finals of the GC All England
Handicap Tournament held at Surbiton. Congratulations are offered to Jan who has
qualified for the final. Monday also saw GC Team A play Dogmersfield in the SECF
GC Handicap League achieving their second win of the season.
SECF GC Team Day results:
GGCC Team 2 - Doubles: 2nd place, Singles: 3rd place
GGCC Team 1 - Doubles: 7th place, Singles: 12th place
Match result: Guildford & Godalming 5 Dogmersfield 4
07.08.16 Fifth time win for Stephen Mulliner Congratulations to Stephen Mulliner
who has won the Championship of Surrey for the fifth time. Details of the championship
results can be found on the CA website.
06.08.16 Marian Manning (Colchester) won the GGCC Golf Croquet B-level tournament
This tournament is one of the national B-level series and Marian therefore qualifies
for the final. She was presented with the MARE Cup by the tournament manager, Mike
Huxley. For a detailed report see the CA website.
30.07.16 A win for the U League team Purley Bury were very hospital hosts for this
away match. At lunch the home team were in the lead 2:1 but GGCC felt they had a
chance to reverse the position in the afternoon singles matches and so were able
to enjoy the pleasant al fresco lunch. A large crowd attending the Surrey Bowls finals
on the adjacent bowls lawn occasionally proved distracting but GGCC pulled back to
win by a narrow margin. Mark GJ and Peter G both pegged out and then it was down
to Ian F, already having proved he was on form in the morning, who fought to overtake
his opponent and win +3 on time.
Match result: Guildford & Godalming 4 Purley Bury 3
29.07.16 Golf Croquet results The competition to decide the club’s qualifiers for
the regional finals of the All England GC Handicap Tournament was held on Wednesday.
The results were: Jan Honeysett first with Ron Piper second. Congratulations to
both players on their achievement and our best wishes for their continued success
at the regional finals later this year.
Congratulations also go to GC Team B on winning its recent match against
Sussex County B in the SECF GC Handicap League. Team B has now played 3 of its 4
Match result: Guildford & Godalming 5 Sussex County B 4
02.07.16 U League face strong opponents GGCC made a good start with Stephen winning
the first game. Then Reigate Priory B drew even but after a close fought doubles
match GGCC were 2-1 down at lunch. Much fortified after an excellent lunch provided
by the catering team Guildford attempted a fight back. With two games to finish the
score was 3-2 to Reigate with rain and squalls increasing the challenge. Robert
and Peter both made valiant attempts to win the last two games and in both games
all balls were taken through rover. In each game the advantage swung both ways providing
some tense viewing. The sun returned but unfortunately lady luck did not. Finally
Reigate took both games +2.
Match result: Guildford and Godalming 2 Reigate Priory B 5
20.06.16 Murphy Shield On Monday our team faced strong opponents when they played
their Round 2 match at home against Phyllis Court. After some protracted games our
team clinched the match 4 games to 3 and so move forward to Round 3. The next match
will be at home against Merton.
20.06.16 Congratulations to Stephen on two more titles Last week at Southwick the
partnership of Stephen Mulliner and Reg Bamford defeated the defending champions
to win the final of the British GC Open Doubles Championship for the fourth time.
Stephen’s success in the doubles was matched at the weekend when he won British
GC Open Singles Championship for the seventh time defeating Toby Savage in the final.
18.06.16 GC One-day Handicap Tournament for the second year running the trophy, PJ’s
Pot, was won by Ian Norris (0). The two finalists, Ian Norris and Julie Tremble (7),
had both won all the matches in their respective blocks and congratulations are due
to both. The full tournament report is on the CA website.
16.06.16 Our clubhouse!
After 30 years our longed for clubhouse has been erected and is ready to be painted.
The desire for a clubhouse grew stronger over the years and, as soon as the restriction
on development was lifted, was matched by the determination to make it happen. That
a clubhouse has been built so soon after development became possible is down to the
generosity of members and to the substantial grants we received. Our grateful thanks
to the Croquet Association, Surrey County Playing Fields Association and the South
East Croquet Federation for recognising our need for a clubhouse and providing financial
support for the project. The building is only the first step of our development
programme and plans for Phase 2, which include connecting to the sewer, are already
15.06.16 A close result Guildford & Godalming played Cheam at home in their first
Association U League match of the season. With one game still to finish the outcome
of the match was in the balance at 3 all. The last game went to time and was won
by just one point but that was enough for Cheam to take the match. An excellent lunch
was provided by one of catering team.
Match result: Guildford and Godalming 3 Cheam 4
14.06.16 Success for Golf Handicap Teams Teams A and B both had home fixtures this
week in the SECF GC Handicap league. Team B played their fixture against Rother
Valley on Monday afternoon. This was their second match of the season and they won
7 games to 2. After the match both teams enjoyed a cream tea in the tent kindly provided
by a member of the catering team.
On Tuesday morning Team A played their first match in the league against Chichester
and Fishbourne. They have made a good start to the season winning the match by 6
games to 3. A member of the catering team kindly provided a buffet lunch for both
teams. Math results:
Guildford & Godalming 7 Rother Valley 2
Guildford & Godalming 6 Chichester & Fishbourne 3
10.06.16 In memory of Amanda Bentley A service of thanksgiving for the life of Amanda
was held at Guildford Crematorium today. Amanda touched so many lives that the chapel
overflowed with friends saying their farewells. Eleven members of our club attended
the service and later joined the family for refreshments at Broadwater Pavilion,
sharing their fond memories with Jay, Danny and Bekki.
05.06.16 National Croquet Day This was the first National Croquet Day promoted by
the Croquet Association and supported by clubs around the country. We hosted an
open taster day which attracted more than 40 visitors who were invited on to the
lawns to play croquet with our members. Visitors had the opportunity to try both
association and golf croquet and many who had just intended to ‘pop in’ stayed for
several hours. Clear blue skies and brilliant sunshine provided the perfect setting
throughout the day and by late afternoon people were glad to take a break from playing
and enjoy cold drinks and homemade cakes provided by members. Photos.
25.05.16 Demolition The demolition team demonstrated their skills of 'percussive
violence'. After a day's exhausting work the shelter and portaloo have been demolished
and everything flattened, hacksawed and sledge hammered into submission. The skip
was filled, a work of art to fit everything in, and has been removed. Plans are in
hand to move the Bowls manager’s shed and clear the leaves etc in readiness for the
erection of the clubhouse in mid-June. Photos.
27.05.16 Golf Croquet Our golf croquet teams have fared a rather better than the
association ones in their first matches of the season. GC Handicap Team B lost 7:2
to Lodsworth in its first SECF league match of the season; however, it was a much
closer match than the result indicates with five of the matches lost going to the
golden hoop. Thank you to the catering team for providing an excellent lunch for
this home match. Our first success of the season was in the Murphy Shield with our
team winning 4:2 against Sussex County CC in the match at Southwick. Congratulations
to the team who move forward to Round 2 of this knockout competition and will now
play Phyllis Court at home in late June or early July.
23.05.16 Association croquet It has been a disappointing start to the season for
our association teams. In the first outing of the season, the SECF Team Doubles on
21-22 May, our team came seventh overall with four wins out of a possible ten. On
the following Monday a team travelled to Poole to play East Dorset in Round 1 of
the Longman Cup but with only one win for GGCC the final result was 6:1 to East Dorset.
20.05.16 Tier 3 results the first Tier 3 level of the World Croquet Federation Golf
Croquet World Team Championship was hosted by Guildford and Godalming CC. Teams from
Norway, Portugal, Russia and a CA Select team playing hors concours competed over
three days. The competition was an ‘all play all’ format with each team playing a
number of singles and doubles matches against one of the other teams each day and
then competing against a different team the next day. After three days the results
were: 1st Norway with 6 points, 2nd Russia with 4 points, and third Portugal with
2 points. Photos
18.05.16 Wrest Park win for Chris Congratulations to Chris H on winning the Wrest
Park B-level GC Tournament onWednesday. He reports that his handicap has now moved
down to 2. The tournament is one of the qualifying competitions for the National
GC B-level Series Final to be held at Budleigh on 8 and 9 October.
17.05.16 Charity One-Ball 2016 raises £3,505 + £662 Gift Aid for Myeloma UK. Thanks
to everybody who participated in this year’s competition: 33 heats were held and
419 players took part. 37 players took part in the final at Surbiton and congratulations
go to the winner, Nigel Trotter, of Caterham CC, playing off a handicap of 14. (KC)
08.05.16 The Guildford & Godalming Open Challenge Cup After two days play Nick Parish
and Harry Fisher, both handicap -1.5, had each won 5 of their 6 games so the tournament
rested on who beat whom in their head to head. Nick Parish, who won that game, was
declared winner of the tournament and presented with the trophy. Also of note was
Nick Parish's only loss which was to Chris O'Bryne, handicap 5, from Reigate; Chris
beat Nick +26tp and achieved his first ever triple peel under tournament conditions.
08.05.16 One-ball Charity Final Stephen SM was one of the 40 competitors in this
year’s competition which took place on Sunday at Surbiton. Stephen came third in
the final and won an engraved wine glass as a memento of his achievement. This year’s
event was in aid of Myeloma UK which supports those with bone marrow cancer.
25.04.16 Stephen Mulliner wins AC World Championship Stephen Mulliner has just won
the Association Croquet World Championship, held in Palm Beach, Florida. There were
80 contestants from around the world with 32 going through to the final knockout
stage. The quarter finals, semi-finals and final were each the best of 5 matches,
requiring both skill and stamina. Stephen beat David Maloof of the USA in the best-of-five
final which lasted eleven and a half hours with play finishing under lights. Two
matches down Stephen then turned the tables on David and went on to win the last
three matches to take the championship. Congratulations to Stephen on this magnificent
17.04.16 One-ball Charity Qualifier Following two very wet days the nine members
competing to qualify for the Surbiton final welcomed the warm spring sunshine. This
year’s competition was in aid of the charity Myeloma UK and competitors sported various
amounts and shades of orange, the charity’s colour. Discreet touches of faded
hue, well-dressed hats, boiler suits and notably Barry occasionally flashing a pendant
(see photos!). It was an all play competition and with many of the competitors making
their first foray onto the lawns after a winter break mutterings of being rusty or
out of practice proved unfounded. Stephen SM might not have played for months but
he proved that he was in excellent one-ball form and regardless of some stiff opposition
overcame all opponents to win the trophy for the third consecutive year. Gillian
came a close second winning all of her matches except the one against Stephen. The
final is being held at Surbiton on Sunday, 8 May and we wish Stephen every success.
Thank you to the players and to those who unfortunately had to withdraw for their
entry fees which raised £55 for Myeloma UK. Our thanks also to Mike our player manager
for the day. Photos(4).....
02.04.16 Applewood Bowl The summer season opened with this informal mini-tournament
with its established format of two to three rounds of one-ball and two rounds of
14-point handicap advanced games. The newly powder coated hoops sparkled in the sunshine
and with barely a whisper of wind it was a beautiful day for playing association
croquet. Eight members enjoyed both the croquet and the opportunity to catch up with
each other and in the warm weather it was no hardship to sit out and watch a break.
After a leisurely lunch break and the second round of 14-point games the cloud started
to bubble up in the late afternoon and it was time for the manager to declare the
results and present the Applewood Bowl to the winner, Stephen SM. Our thanks go to
Arthur for organising and managing the event so well. Photos

07.12.15 Christmas Lunch Once again we had an excellent turnout for our, by now,
traditional annual Christmas lunch which this year was held at the Inn on the Lake.
For the first time we were seated at two tables and whilst before the meal there
was much talk of moving places between courses, in the event people were either too
engaged in conversation or possibly too replete to move. The mild weather may have
been rather unseasonal but this in no way affected the event and crackers were pulled
and turkey consumed with enthusiasm.
07/09/12 All England Association Handicap Area Final - 5 & 6 September Guildford
& Godalming had two members, Barry and Ian, playing in the regional finals which
this year were held at Surbiton. With 4 wins from the 5 games played, Ian won the
Area Final and now goes forward to play in the National Final at Chester on 19 &
02/09/15 GC Level Play League Our third match of the season was played away to Compton
with the team managing to secure its second win of the season. Team members: Chris,
Mike H, Gillian and Tony.
Match result: Guildford & Godalming 4 Compton 3
19/08/15 Mid-Surrey Federation of Townswomen’s Guilds Once again we had pleasure
in hosting the TG’s annual croquet tournament. 35 members formed into 18 teams
to compete for the impressive trophy. Play started shortly after 10.00 am and continued
until rain finally stopped play about 3.30 pm. With only one break for the traditional
picnic lunch the teams completed an impressive 79 games and all 4 lawns were kept
busy with games double-banked. As the competition progressed two teams emerged as
the front runners:Team Birdie (Jill) and Pink Totties (Irene & Viv). At close of
play Team Birdie won the competition with the highest percentage of wins and was
presented with the trophy by Ellen. A Pair of Jays (Jean & Jilly) put in a good
performance to take third place.
10.08.15 A clean sweep for Team A Golf Handicap Team A played their last match of
the season against Rother Valley on Monday 10 August. It was a hard fought game with
a score of 1 all after the two doubles in the first round; then it was 3 all after
the next round of four singles. The final round comprised two singles and a doubles
and as the two singles finished the score was 4 all. It all depended on the last
game where Mike and Lynn needed to win their doubles match. Fortunately they pulled
out all the stops to win the game and take the match for Guildford and Godalming.
Rother Valley were friendly opponents and both teams enjoyed a post-match lunch provided
by Hilary. Players were Charles, Julie, Lynn and Mike H.
Match result: Guildford & Godalming 5 Rother Valley 4
This final match gave Guildford & Godalming a clean sweep in their four matches.
Those competing for Team A this season were: Andrea, Charles, Hilary, Julie, Lynn,
Mike H and Peter. Many thanks to all of them for representing the club - and winning!
08.08.15 Peter Dowd wins the MARE Cup 16 players competed for the MARE Cup in GGCC’s
GC B-level Open Tournament, a qualifier for the National B-level Series. Conditions
were challenging with fast lawns and the sun beating down.... Photos
05.08.15 GC Level Play League Our team played its second league match of the season
at home to Sussex County. Mike H summed up ‘Well, we were well and truly thumped
by a better team! Sussex were well-deserved winners on the day.’.
Match result: Guildford & Godalming 1 Sussex County 6
04.08.15 Taster Day In spite of an overcast sky and a strong breeze twenty-five visitors,
from complete novices to more experienced players, took the opportunity to play croquet
with members of the club. Several visitors arrived early but members were already
there to welcome and play with them; nearly everyone stayed for the whole afternoon
so our four lawns were really busy throughout the event but no one had to wait for
a game or sit out. The weather stayed dry and visitors and members played on after
the official closing time finally stopping to enjoy the refreshments that had been
provided by members. Comments from visitors were very positive and the club hopes
to welcome some new members in the next few weeks. A most successful open day thanks
to Alex, our D of E volunteer, and the nineteen members who supported the event not
to mention those who could not come on the day but helped publicise the event.
02.05.15 SECF Golf Croquet Team Day Southwick was once again the venue for this
event comprising team doubles and team singles. Our team enjoyed the day though those
with very low handicaps found it very frustrating to play against opponents who
under the trial handicap system received 7 or more bisques. Team: Andrea, Hilary,
Mike H, Tony.
19 teams competed. Our results were: Singles - 5th; Doubles - 16th.
01.05.15 U League match against Ealing Our team travelled to Ealing for the final
match of the season. Having won their previous three matches it was slightly disappointing
to finish the season with losing the match. Nonetheless the team put in a good performance
and Ealing only took the match by one game. Team: Arthur, Mark, Mike T, Robert.
Match result: Guildford & Godalming 3 Ealing 4
22.07.15 U League match against Reigate During a cloudy and at times very windy morning
the GGCC team lost their doubles and both singles in some closely fought games. At
lunchtime we were 3 down with 4 games to play. After a fine lunch provided by Jennifer
our team set out with some trepidation knowing that we needed to win all four singles
to clinch the match. Ian was first to achieve a strong win and pegged out with time
to spare. Robert and Audrey each maintained good leads and won on points. With
the score now 3 all the result of the match hung on Barry who was playing against
Chris, a rapidly improving Reigate player with impressive strength and accuracy.
The game went to time and Barry won on points; a fine example of experience and tactics
winning through. An amazing fight back from three nil to win the match. Team: Audrey,
Barry, Ian and Robert.
Match result: Guildford & Godalming 4 Reigate 3
19.07.15 Association B-level Advanced Weekend The weather was hot and sunny on the
first day of play and the lawns were fast. The format was a modified Swiss with
three rounds being played on the Saturday; the last of these ran well into the evening
but although the temperature started to drop the light remained good. The forecast
overnight rain did little more than mist the lawns which maintained their speed on
the second day. There was fierce but friendly competition throughout the weekend’s
play with the trophy in contention to the last. Finally the tournament manager,
Mark Godfrey-James, presented Nigel Hames-Keward with the Frank Rendall Trophy. Photos
15.07.15 Our first GC level play match of the season G&G had a successful start to
their campaign in the GC level play league in a home match against Ramsgate. On paper
we were modestly stronger (handicaps: G & G one player on 1 and three on 2; Ramsgate:
three players on 2 and one on 4) and so it proved in practice on a hot day with testing
hoops. We won all three of the morning games (1 doubles and 2 singles) and after
a sumptuous lunch provided by Anne B (for which many thanks) lost just one of the
afternoon's four singles.
Team: Tony, Mike T, Gillian and Chris. (CH)
Match result: Guildford & Godalming 6 Ramsgate 1
13.07.15 GC Team A champing at the bit Guildford and Godalming Golf Handicap Team
A were due to play Littlehampton in the SECF handicap league on Monday 13 July. The
day started badly with no opponents arriving to play the arranged match. After several
phone calls to establish why there was a problem, the Littlehampton team arrived
to have a speedy lunch before play began.
The first round of two doubles games went to G & G. The second round of four singles
games gave a further 3 wins to Guildford and Godalming. (5-1 so far!) The third round
was for one doubles game and two singles. G & G won the first singles game but lost
the doubles. The final singles game gave victory to Guildford and Godalming. The
team of Mike H, Charles, Andrea, Peter and Hilary were delighted with the result
which maintained Team A’s clean sheet. (AH)
Match result: Guildford & Godalming 7 Littlehampton 2
11.07.15 Some disappointing results After a successful start to the season the results
of last week’s inter-club matches were disappointing.
Longman Cup Round 2 - Saturday saw our second round Longman Cup match against Reigate
being played at home and following the spell of dry hot weather both teams found
the lawns were fast and the hoops unforgiving.
Match result: Guildford & Godalming 2 Reigate 5
GC Team B - On the Tuesday Team B played its first GC handicap league match of the
season at Woking; the hosts were welcoming, the lawns green and the roses and clematis
beautiful. Following the league match, a pleasant afternoon was spent playing some
friendly mixed team games after which the team was treated to tea and cake.
Match result: Guildford & Godalming 2 Woking 7
Murphy Shield Round 2 - Finally on Friday our Murphy Shield team travelled to Phyllis
Court for its second round match, a quarter final. It proved to be a closely contested

02.07.15 Nail biting finish at Southwick in SECF U League match against Sussex
County. The weather in Sussex was wet in the morning but brightened up after lunch
to give a lovely evening. In the morning Ian lost very quickly - just over the hour
- but in the doubles Arthur and Barry soon levelled the scores with a 26-0 victory.
The crucial singles seemed to be going against Peter until his opponent accidentally
pegged out one of his balls. Peter was able to take advantage of this and came out
the winner by one point. After lunch we needed two more points. Ian soon had our
first victory but then Barry and Peter were well-beaten. Everything depended on Arthur.
After two hours he was well behind but then he hit in and was able to take his backward
ball round to peg. He followed this soon after by taking his other ball from 4-back
to peg and pegging out to win by 3 points. A couple of close shaves but we WON! (BG)
Match result: Guildford & Godalming 4 Sussex County 3
23.06.15 Croquet by Candlelight The weather was ideal for the mid-summer croquet
social - warm, dry and with only the most gentle of breezes. The superb ‘bring and
share’ buffet was set out in the lunch cabin, the final touch being a pretty posy
arranged by Ginny. During an interval in play members and guests enjoyed the excellent
food and, the weather being fine, were able to eat in the open by the lawns. The
moon rose, the stars came out, the lanterns lit up and the enthusiasts returned to
the lawns for more croquet until it was too dark to play even with head torches.
22.06.15 Golf Croquet Referee Congratulations to Mike H who recently attended a
course for Golf Croquet Referees; having passed the end of course examination he
is now a qualified Golf Croquet Referee.
20.06.15 Open GC Handicap Tournament 16 players, including six ‘home’ players,
with a wide range of handicaps competed for the trophy, PJ’s Pot. In the morning
players were divided into four groups each of 4 players with the top two of each
group then qualifying for the afternoon knockout. The final results were: 1st Ian
Norris (H’cap 1), 2nd Peter Dowd (H’cap 5), 3rd Julie Tremble (H’cap 8). The tournament
manager, Mike Huxley, presented Ian Norris with PJ’s Pot.
18.06.15 Team A celebrates a second success in the SECF GC Handicap League On
a beautiful warm summer day the team of Hilary B, Peter G, Andrea H and Mike H travelled
to Eastbourne to play at Compton Croquet Club. The match started well with G & G
winning both the doubles games 7-5, 7-5. The team then went on to win 3 out of the
4 games in the next round of singles. In the final round, a doubles and two singles,
we fared less well, winning one of the singles but losing the other two games. However
this was sufficient to secure a comfortable win. The Compton team were very welcoming
and all the games were played in a very friendly manner. Croquet playing finished,
we were entertained to a splendid tea. A good day all round! Photos
Match result: Guildford & Godalming 6 Compton 3
10.06.15 Another win for Guildford & Godalming. In the first SECF association U League
match of the season we entertained a very experienced team from Rother Valley. In
the morning session we managed to get a 2 to 1 lead having won the doubles and one
of the single games. However, after a good lunch prepared by Jennifer we had a tougher
time in the afternoon. The sun came out and the lawns speeded up, making playing
conditions much more difficult. Arthur lost by a single point and Ian managed to
win but only after his opponent had failed in his peg out attempt. Barry scraped
a win and so the match was won by one game. (BG) Team: Barry G, Arthur L, Ian F and
Peter G. Photo
Match result: Guildford & Godalming 4 Rother Valley 3
06.06.15 Longman Cup v Ramsgate The weather was dry and fine but strong winds swept
across the lawns throughout the day - our opponents were undeterred accustomed as
they are to playing on an exposed promenade. The lunchtime score was 2:1 to our team
with the doubles and one single being won on time. Our team needed to win at least
two of the four afternoon singles to win the match. Revived by lunch, or invigorated
by the wind, the team went out and despite some tricky moments and strong competition
won through to take all four games. Our team is now through to Round 2 and will
meet Reigate Priory in another home match. Congratulations to team members: Mark
G-J, Stephen S-M, Ian F and Audrey P.
Match result: Guildford & Godalming 6 Ramsgate 1
29.05.15 Murphy Shield v Sussex County Undeterred by appalling weather our team stormed
to victory with a decisive win over Sussex County (aka Southwick). This was only
the second year we have entered this national level play GC knockout competition
and the result was particularly pleasing as the opposition was reputedly strong.
Our team will now meet either Phyllis Court or Leighton Linslade in the quarter final.
Match result: Guildford & Godalming 6 Sussex County 1
28.05.15 Success for Team A GC Handicap Team A made an excellent start to the season
in their away match to Worthing. Accustomed to playing on full-sized lawns, our
team had to adapt to playing on two lawns squeezed into one bowling green and it
being all too easy to over hit! Andrea reports that the team played reasonably well
and at four games each there was everything to play for in the last doubles; fortunately
the partnership of HilaryB and LynnE did not know that everything depended on the
outcome. They won the game 7-5 so clinching the match for GGCC. Worthing were friendly
hosts and tea delicious. Congratulations to team members: AndreaH, HilaryB, LynnE
Match result: Guildford & Godalming 5 Worthing 4
17.05.15 SECF AC Team Doubles Weekend GGCC fielded a different team of four players
on each day. On the Saturday our players won four of their six matches; however,
on the Sunday things did not go quite so well. One partnership won their first match
and then came up against a tense situation with three balls on peg and our in-player
facing the daunting task of attempting to make a break from hoop 2; he managed to
get to 9 but then the opposition came in to finish the match. The result for the
weekend was 5 wins out of 10 matches played. The results and the final positions
of the teams will be published on the SECF web site in due course.
10.05.15 Guildford & Godalming Open Challenge Cup An unexpected late entry meant
that manager, Tony M, had to make some minor adjustments to the format of this advanced
association tournament. However, the weather was kind to the competitors and everything
ran smoothly. Congratulations to Jose Riva from London who won all his games and
was presented with the Open Challenge Cup by TonyM.
10.05.15 One-ball Charity Competition raises over £4,000 - Kevin Carter, manager
of the annual event, reports that a total of 430 players participated in 29 heats
and the provisional figure raised
for Bowel Cancer UK was £3,400, plus £800 in Gift
Aid. He sends his thanks to all players, heat organisers and to Surbiton who hosted
the final this year. The winner was Andrew Killick from Middlesborough and the runner-up
David Nicholson of Winchester.
Stephen SM, winner of our qualifying event reports on his experience of coming up
against David Nicholson... ’30 people turned up and the weather was great. Sorry
folks I didn't bring a cup back. On 4 wins out of 5 I was feeling quite smug having
just rescued a game with my first ever nine point break without bisques. The next
game soon brought my come uppance. Playing, or should I say watching David Nicholson
(hcp -1 cut to -4 for one ball). I'd put him close to NE corner 2 and rolled my ball
2 feet S of the first hoop. Unfortunatley he hit my ball square on with a 30 yd roquet
and followed that with a mesmerising 13 point break to win! I then lost my form a
bit and finished the day on 5 out of 9.’
13.04.15 Applewood Bowl and One-ball Trophy It was a busy weekend for association
croquet players. On Friday eight members competed in an informal Winter Association
Short Games Tournament for the Applewood Bowl. Competitors had to play two games
of One-ball and two 14-point games of handicap association to advanced rules - a
format designed to minimise sitting out in the cooler months. All matches having
been played there were three players in the running to win; it was agreed that the
decider should be a play-off between them, each having four shots at the peg. Mike
T won the play-off and so won the trophy for the second time this season. Congratulations
to Mike T and thanks to Arthur L for arranging and managing the tournament.
The One-ball Charity Qualifier for the final to be played at Surbiton in May was
held on Sunday. The charity this year is Bowel Cancer UK and players were asked to
wear something purple to reflect their support. Not only did the players sport purple,
varying from a discreet flash to some rather more flamboyant hats, but the spectator
also wore purple. As the competition progressed Stephen SM began to emerge as the
most likely winner; despite the efforts of his opponents his lead continued to increase
and at the end of the day he had won 7 of the 8 games he played to win the One-ball
trophy for the second consecutive year. Thanks to all competitors for their donations
to the charity, to Mike H for managing the tournament, to Jennifer F for making the
arrangements and congratulations to Stephen SM who goes forward to play in the final
at Surbiton. Photos of both events.
29.03.15 Fencing The good news is that not only have we erected the new fence between
the croquet lawns and the rugby pitches but we have done so both on schedule and
on budget! Using volunteer labour has saved us just over £2,000. It’s amazing what
can be achieved - let’s hope we prove to be as successful playing croquet later in
the season. The work was quite a challenge for a club of our size and for those
more familiar with a croquet mallet than a sledge hammer; however, a good eye for
a line proved invaluable.
A big thank you goes to Arthur for planning and over-seeing the work, providing most
of the tools, and for carrying out the preliminary turf cutting and post digging.
Special thanks also go to Adam, one of Arthur’s sons, who willingly gave up his
time to help both with the preliminary work and with the fencing - without his assistance
the job would not have gone so smoothly. Not least we express our thanks to the
fencing team who not only demonstrated practical skills they never knew they possessed
but provided an admirable example of good team working. The team comprised: Andrew,
Anthony, Barry, Chris, Hilary, Ian, Jennifer, Mike H, Mike T and Stephen M.
Support for the job was provided by Jay and Ginny, Arthur’s wife, who kindly provided
cakes and scones. When energy levels started to flag a short ‘cake break’ was called
and soon sent the team back to the task of post bashing with renewed vigour.
If you missed out on this event then there will be further opportunities to help
with rabbit-proof fencing the rest of the perimeter in the coming weeks. Photos
23.01.15 Last rites The last rites for the beech hedge between what we should now
call lawns 1 and 2 were performed privately in Arthur's garden on Friday evening.
(AL) 2 Photos
20.01.15 Tackling the hedge Whilst most members have stayed by the fireside during
the recent cold snap Stephen M chose an alternative way of keeping warm and single-handedly
tackled reducing the the beech hedge between the bowls lawn and lawn 4. When it
became clear that the amount of cuttings was too large for on site disposal Arthur
L came to the rescue with a trailer and is no doubt now enjoying a mammoth bonfire.
Many thanks to Stephen and Arthur who have shown what a day or two of volunteering

04.12.14 Christmas Lunch This year the venue was The Star in Witley where we took
over the front bar for our festive lunch. Once again we had an excellent turnout
with those members who had continued to play into winter catching up with those who
had put away their mallets in the autumn. In spite of having enjoyed a two or three
course meal members still managed to do justice to the coffee and mince pies which
rounded off the meal.
15.11.14 Mini-tournament On a misty but dry winter's day 5 members enjoyed an informal
mini-tournament of Association croquet. Two rounds of one-ball games were followed
by two of 14-point handicap advanced games (with a pub lunch between them), and a
final one-ball to close. The programme was designed to minimise the length of time
players had to sit out getting cold while their opponent was in play - in which it
largely succeeded, even though, because of the odd number of contestants, someone
had to sit out with a bye in each round. In the end, Mike Thompson came out the winner,
with Tony Mrozinski a close second. Another event of similar format could be staged
later, perhaps in early spring, if there is sufficient interest. (AL) Photo
20.10.14 SECF League Results We entered three golf croquet teams and one association
team in the SECF leagues this summer. Results were:
Golf Handicap Team B - 2nd out of 16 in the western half of the league
Golf Handicap Team A - 5th out of 16 in the western half of the league
Golf Level Play Team - 2nd out of 6
Association U League - 8th out of 14
21.09.14 A second win for our GC Level Play Team For the third of their four matches
in the SECF League the team were playing away against Surbiton. Strong opposition
and a good lunch were expected. After a closely fought match our team finally secured
the match by one game. Congratulations to team members Tony M, Mike T, Chris H and
Amanda B. The final match of the season is on Wednesday, 1 October when the team
is playing at home against Compton.
Match Result: Guildford & Godalming 4 Surbiton 3
15.09.14 A straight set of wins Congratulations to Golf Handicap Team B who won their
final match of the season against Dogmersfield on Monday. Mike T reports that whilst
they have won all four of their matches, it looks as though the team will be placed
second in the league. The successful team members were: Mike T, Amanda B and Anne
B each of whom played in all 4 matches; Ann L who played in 3 and Jay B who played

06.09.14 Final U League match of the season This was the first time the Bowls lawn
was used for an association match and it was interesting to see how players adapted
to the difference of speed between it and Lawn 4. By lunch Reigate were in the lead
two games to one having won the doubles and one single, whilst Mark GJ had won his
singles on time for the home team. There was still everything to play for in the
singles after lunch but an early win by Reigate was followed by two more wins until
there was only Mike T’s match in contention. Mike T finally clinched his match winning
by one point on time. Half the Reigate team had left well before the end of the match
and it was left to their last two players to take the match results back.
Match Result: Guildford & Godalming 2 Reigate Priory B 5
01.09.14 Strong opponents in SECF GC Level Play League With G & G unable to field
a full strength team, this fixture was always going to be difficult, especially as
Sussex are probably the strongest team in the league and favoured to win it.
The Sussex team had handicaps of 0, 2, 2 and 2 against G&G’s 2, 3, 3 and 4. On paper,
this seemed to be a bit of a long shot, and so it proved. The morning doubles was
comfortably won by Sussex, but the two singles were shared, with Chris Heath notching
up a good victory. So, 2-1 to Sussex at lunchtime, with four singles to be played
in the afternoon. The two Mikes each lost their singles by two games to one, against
opponents ranked much higher. Mike H’s third game was quite tight, but was effectively
put out of reach at hoop 10. Mike looked favourite to win the hoop and level at 5-5,
until his opponent played an excellent clearance shot that resulted in an in-off
that seemed to defy the laws of physics! That put Alan Cottle (0) 6-4 up and despite
a brief rally from Mike, Alan ran out the winner by 7-5. On the second lawn, Mike
T came back from a game down to level at 1-1, but couldn’t quite nail his opponent
down in the third. The other two singles went comfortably to Sussex.
Despite the scoreline, the G&G team thoroughly enjoyed the match and the hospitality
of the home club. It’s our first season in this league and is a bit of a learning
experience! So far, we have played two matches and won one of them. If we could win
one of the remaining two, and finish with a won two lost two record, that would,
I think, be a reasonable first effort. If we won both, that would be amazing! (MAH)
Match Result: Guildford & Godalming 1 Sussex County 6
31.08.14 Shoot out for Stephen SM Three G & G members took part in the Association
Croquet All-England Handicap Area Final at the Surbiton Club this weekend. Of the
16 competitors, four who had achieved 4 wins out of 5 went forward as entries to
the national final. In addition, a Reserve had to be selected, but there were two
competitors with 3 wins each - one of which was Stephen SM.
So a challenge was set to determine who should take the reserve place. 5 shots each
at the first hoop from A-baulk; 3 points for running the hoop, 2 if stuck in the
jaws, and 1 if any part of the hoop is hit. In this challenge, Stephen came out a
clear winner, and so was nominated as the reserve entrant for the national final,
should one of the four selected entrants drop out. (AL) Photos
28.08.14 Major work completed on new lawns A week after the preparatory spraying
the contractors returned to undertake the major ground work and seeding. An early
start was once again the order of the day for Arthur who was at the club to let the
contractors in. The tractors and specialist machinery were soon unloaded and work
on the first phase was well underway before most club members were up. Watching
the turf being stripped and the dance of the tractors at the end of each swathe was
fascinating for the spectator but by 10.00 am this was completed and raking and levelling
began. The contractors carried out the initial levelling by laser and then demonstrated
their expertise with a final manual levelling and compaction. From rough uneven ground
a flat even surface emerged and the prospect of new level lawns became a reality.
Working tirelessly through the day without any hitches the contractors decided to
work late into the evening to complete the seeding and fertilising and so by nightfall
all was completed.
Our thanks to the Croquet Association, Surrey County Playing Fields Association,
and the South East Croquet Federations for their contributions towards the cost of
this project without which it would not have been possible. Lawn photo gallery
27.08.14 Team A’s final match Golf Croquet Handicap Team A played its last match
of the season on Wednesday. Our visitors were Preston Park (Brighton).
Work having just started on the new lawns, play took place on the bowls green and
the old court 4 (maybe it will be the new court 2 in the fullness of time). That
was most definitely a new and strange experience, as lawn 4 was fast, with its usual
inbuilt twists and turns (aim at the flagpole!) whereas the bowls green was much
truer but significantly slower, especially after the recent rain. Mike H, for one,
and possibly others, hadn’t struck a ball on the bowls green before play started
in the match. It didn’t seem to matter, though, as G&G won both opening doubles followed
by all four of the second-round singles. The final round also went to G&G by two
games to one, making the final score G&G 8 Preston Park 1 (60 hoops to 36). BTW Preston
Park received 35 extra turns, G&G received none. A fine win for the ‘A’ team to round
off a successful season (won 3 lost 1) with just the one ‘blip’ in our away match
at West Worthing.
Thanks to Andrea, Chris, Julie and Hilary for their efforts. Let’s go one better
next year and win 4 out of 4! (MAH)
Match Result: Guildford & Godalming 8 Preston Park 1
21.08.14 Work starts on new lawns Arthur reports that the first stage of work to
create the new lawns was successfully completed. Arthur, having refused the offer
of a sleepover in the club tent, had an early start having to be at the club by 6.00
am to open the gates for the contractor. Judges arrived on the dot of 6.00 am and
had finished spraying and gone by 7.00 am. The early start was made to catch the
early morning stillness and with absolutely no breeze there was no spray drift. The
photos (see photo gallery) show why still weather was so important.
As the contractor headed back to Ashford, Arthur’s work was just beginning. The
rope line fence had to be moved to protect the area and warning notices tied on to
deter people and dog walkers. A much longer job than the spraying but just as necessary.
20.08.14 Mid-Surrey Federation of Townswomen’s Guilds Thirty-two TG members entered
their annual croquet tournament this year and were supported by a couple of regular
spectators. It was good to welcome back so many who play year on year and also to
meet some new players and teams. This year Alex, a volunteer working towards his
D of E award, assisted the lawn stewards setting up the courts, resolving players’
queries and helping with the admin. The highlight for our visitors was his ‘porter
service’ between the car park and the lawns.
The weather forecast was good and in spite of the odd cloud it stayed fine all day
so lunch in the sunshine was quite a leisurely affair. Sixteen teams competed for
the impressive trophy and after a fairly slow start in the morning play became brisker
after lunch with most teams playing about 9 games but a few managing an impressive
10 or 11. Finally it was time to stop playing, run the raffle and calculate the
results. Ellen Jenkinson presented the cup to the winning team ‘Never Grow UP’.
17.08.14 SECF GC Level Play v Ryde Tony, Mike H, Barry and Chris formed the team
that dipped its toes for the first time into the SECF Level Play League.
Our visitors, from Ryde (IoW) kept us waiting in the cold for a while (something
to do with ferries); eventually arriving at 11am, so there wasn’t a lot of time for
chit-chat. It was straight on with the show, as it were.
The format for this league is one best-of-three doubles match and two best-of-three
singles matches in the morning session, and then four best-of-three singles matches
in the afternoon.
Our opponents had GC handicaps of 1, 2, 3, 3 compared with out 2, 2, 3, 4, so they
were marginally the stronger side on paper. It proved not to be so on the courts,
though. By lunchtime, G&G had won all three matches, and that was followed by the
home side winning three of the four afternoon matches
A fun day’s croquet with very friendly opponents. Well done team! (MAH)
Match Result: Guildford & Godalming 6 Ryde 1
12.08.14 GC Handicap All England Regional Finals Charles, Joan and Robert competed
in the regional final held at Surbiton on Tuesday for a place in the national final.
Joan and Charles had mixed results but Robert was in better form and is congratulated
on securing a place at the finals later in the year.
11.08.14 Liphook U3A Croquet 1 Nine members of this group visited the club on Monday
morning to find out about playing a 4-ball break and playing with bisques. The visitors
had asked us to put on a demo-game and we had suggested that they then take to the
lawns to put what they had seen into practice. Highlight of the morning was Arthur’s
execution of a faultless textbook 4-ball break through 6 hoops. After this impressive
start Ian crossed his fingers to play Arthur and get a break going with 2 bisques.
The visitors then played alternate turn doubles with support from their leader and
09.08.14 Level pegging to hoop 13 - On Saturday 12 competitors vied to win the B-level
GC Tournament and a place in the national final in October. It was only after 5 rounds
that the final contenders were identified; a really nailbiting game followed until
the outcome hung on hoop 13.... To read about how the match unfolded and discover
who won .....
06.08.14 Triumph for Amanda Six members with handicaps between 4 and 9 competed
fiercely in the new one-day Intermediate Level Play Club Golf Croquet Tournament.
Amanda emerged as the clear winner having won her matches against each of the other
competitors in this all play all competition. Manager, Mike T, reported that the
competition was a great success if a tad tiring so repairing to the local hostelry
for refreshment was a fitting conclusion.
05.08.14 Open Day This was our most successful open/taster day to date and for the
first time was run in association with the Godalming Staycation programme. At one
point 25 visitors were on the lawns enjoying games with club members. The Mayor and
Mayoress of Godalming, Councillor Andrew Wilson and his wife Jocelyn, supported the
event and both of them took to the lawns for a game of croquet complete with mayoral
chains. Refreshments provided by members were on offer but it was not until late
afternoon that people took time out from playing to enjoy them. Photos
03.08.14 SECF GC Team Day We entered only one team this year: Tony, Amanda, Mike
H and Andrea.
There were 18 teams entered in all. The morning’s competition involved playing 4
doubles games, single banked, each of the team’s pairs playing two games. G&G did
reasonably well, scoring 2.5 wins out of 4 (draws were permissible since all games
were subject to strict time limits). We finished 5th out of 18 teams as a consequence
of having a good points difference ( hoops scored minus hoops conceded). Mike and
Andrea were extremely frustrated by an astonishingly slow pair who held interminable
committee meetings. After 40 minutes, the opponents had used up all of their 5 extra
turns and the score was 3-3. Yes, you read that correctly. Only 6 hoops completed
in 40 minutes!
The afternoon singles started rather indifferently, with only 1 point being scored
out of the first 4 games. Thereafter, thing looked up, the team girded their loins,
as it were, and G&G finished with 7.5 wins out of 12, again putting them in 5th place
out of 18 teams.
Impressive performance of the day was off the lawns, where Tony put on an exhibition
of cake eating.
Overall, not a bad performance and it was a grand day out in the sunshine. (MAH)
30.07.14 Friendly competition A (very) Friendly match against Rother Valley, blessed
by warmth and sunshine all day, resulted in a narrow win for G & G.. Lunch and tea,
provided by Jennifer, added to the enjoyment and sociability of the day.
Valley team, with handicaps ranging from 14 to 20, put quite a strain on our supply
of bisques, since the G & G team, with the exception of Joan who played doubles with
Arthur in the morning only, all had handicaps less than 10. Nonetheless, most games
were closely fought: only Gillian achieved a thoroughly dominant win by 24 points,
which included a complete 12-hoop break with one ball.
An enjoyable day for all: hopefully next season there will be more higher-handicap
G & G members interested to experience some competitive Association croquet in the
context of a Friendly match such as this, perhaps as an introduction to embarking
on open tournament play. (AL)
Match Result: Guildford & Godalming 4 Rother Valley 3
26.07.14 Another win at Hamptworth Congratulations to Chris Heath on winning the
Hamptworth B-level Singles GC Tournament on Saturday 26 July. Chris won all six
of his matches and as a consequence his handicap has moved down to 4. The tournament
is one of the B-level Series qualifying tournaments for the national final and so
Chris will go on to play in the final to be held in October.
26.07.14 A nail biting finish This was a tough match, played under sweltering conditions
and we were giving away a lot of bisques. In the morning session Stephen SM won quickly
but Arthur L (singles) and Robert B with Barry G in the doubles both went to time.
Arthur won, so it was 2-1 to us at lunch. Jennifer produced a most welcome lunch
which was enjoyed by all.
In the afternoon Stephen managed another quick win but the rest struggled. Barry
fell behind but his opponent made a near fatal error by only pegging out one of his
balls. Barry had a long hit in and started to claw back the points only to fail the
last hoop allowing his opponent to win by +3. Whilst this game was coming to its
conclusion Robert lost on time and now the match was in Arthur's hands. He was 5
hoops behind but in play. He made 7 further hoops and after time was called scattered
the balls - he had won. Very well done to Stephen and Arthur whose 4 points between
them meant that we won a tight match. (BG)
Match Result: Guildford & Godalming 4 Ealing 3
24.07.14 Another day at the seaside for Team A - Well, the numbers spell it out!
The Handicap A team had a somewhat less than successful visit to West Worthing. Two
doubles matches lost in quick succession, followed by the loss of three of the four
singles in round 2 put us 5 – 1 down after two rounds. Nothing to play for except
a bit of pride, but we didn’t even manage that! Both points were scored by G&G’s
player of the day – Chris Heath – who as a consequence achieved a handicap reduction
from 6 to 5. Hilary, on her team debut, showed considerable promise and was unfortunate
not to get a win in the singles. A disappointing showing from those not mentioned
above! Must do better! (MAH)
Match Result: Guildford & Godalming 2 West Worthing 7
22.07.14 Another win for Team B - well done to Team B who, playing away to Rother
Valley, clinched their third successive win in the SECF Golf Croquet Handicap League.
In spite of the hot weather several of the team members still felt fresh enough
to return to the club to play more croquet.
Match Result: Guildford & Godalming 6 Rother Valley 3
20.07.14 B-Level Advanced Weekend 19-20 July 2014 - at the end of the second day’s
play there were three contenders for the shield with an equal number of wins so it
was down to the manager of the day to work through the criteria of who beat whom,
quality of wins and points. After some serious calculations David Boyd emerged as
the winner taking home the Frank Rendall Trophy for the second year running. Congratulations
to all three who are featured in the photo.
15.07.14 A close thing - We were away for our SECF U League Association match against
Rother Valley. It was a glorious day and we had some lovely countryside to look at
- if the croquet was not exciting enough!
In the morning Rother decided, unusually, to play their two highest handicappers
in the doubles. We played our lower two, giving away bisques in the doubles but hopefully
helping our two singles players. It worked! Andrew F recorded a quick win and Ian
F followed soon after. The doubles was a different matter but Robert B and Barry
G managed to grind out a win +2 on time. So to lunch with a 3-0 advantage. We settled
down to a relaxed & interesting lunch.
The afternoon was not so easy. Robert had a quick loss but the others kept going
and fortunately Andrew managed quite a quick win. In the meantime Barry was struggling
against ex-G&GCC member David B who was quickly 11 hoops ahead. Barry slowly pulled
him back but eventually lost -3. Ian was still going and as time was called needed
a break to rover plus a peel! He started very well but came unstuck at 1-back. So
the perfect morning score had been transformed to a narrow win - many thanks to Andrew,
the only one to win both his games. (BG)
Match Result: Guildford & Godalming 4 Rother Valley 3
12.07.14 Wedding of Mark and Lynn -On Saturday Mark and Lynn celebrated their wedding
at St Andrew’s Church Frimley Green with their family and friends. The marriage ceremony
was followed by a reception, lunch and evening barn dance. Lynn looked very pretty
in a lace dress with pearl edged border and Mark debonair in morning dress. The wedding
car was an open-topped white Morris Minor and the weather was perfect for the short
drive to the reception. Mark and Lynn are combining both surnames and will now be
known as Mr and Mrs Godfrey-James. Photos
09.07.14 A day at the coast for Team A - We last played Chichester & Fishbourne
at home towards the end of last season, winning 8-1. Could things possibly go as
well again in the reverse fixture? Well, victories like that don’t come along very
often, unfortunately. We set off in slightly overcast weather but, by the time we
reached the coast, things had cheered up considerably and it turned out to be a perfect
afternoon for croquet. C&F fielded a team of 6. This is allowed for in the league
rules, so that more people can experience competitive croquet. There were some familiar
faces from last year’s match and a few new ones.
Off we went in the first round of two doubles games – won 1 and lost 1 – so on to
the round of 4 singles which were won 3-1, leaving G&G leading by 4 games to 2. So
the match was still ‘live’ – if C&F won the final round of 2 singles and 1 double
they could win the match 5-4. Unfortunately for them, it was not to be. Andrea and
Chris cruised to comfortable wins in their singles and Mike and Julie took the final
double 7-1. So the match result was 7-2 to G&G ‘A’. Not quite as good as 8-1, but
close. Great team effort all round.
I cannot finish this report without mentioning the friendliness, hospitality, and
cheerfulness in adversity of the Chichester team. A really lovely bunch of people,
and a positively splendid tea to round off the afternoon. Thanks, Chichester, if
you ever read this. (MAH)
PS For those interested in stats - the ‘bisque count’ was: Extra turns conceded:
28; Extra turns received: 1
Match Result: Guildford & Godalming 7 Chichester & Fishbourne 2
03.07.14 A home victory for Team B - In their second SECF golf croquet league match
Team B played Preston Manor at home and achieved their second win of the season.
Congratulations to team members: Mike T, Amanda B, Anne B and Ann L.
Match Result: Guildford & Godalming 7 Preston Manor 2
26.06.14 Croquet by Candlelight The forecast was for rain in the late evening but
unfortunately it started to drizzle about 5 pm just as the lawns were being set up.
Undeterred by the weather everyone turned up for the combined social evening and
SGM. The buffet was laid out in the tent rather than under the gazebo and croquet,
albeit interrupted from time to time by heavy rain, was played regardless. 33 members
and guests managed to squeeze into the tent for the excellent ‘bring and share’ buffet
with one or two hardy soles sheltering outside. The weather improved as the evening
wore on and more croquet was played until the light started to fail.
21.06.14 Homegrown talent On the day of the summer solstice, and what a glorious
day it was, 12 players converged on G&G Croquet Club to compete for PJ’s Pot - the
trophy for Golf Croquet Handicap Singles. No druids present, despite the significant
date and the passing resemblance of a croquet hoop to a trilithon. There were six
members of G&G plus two visitors each from Reigate, Hamptworth and Phyllis Court.
Handicaps ranged from 1 (Ian Norris, Phyllis Court) to 10 (Freda Knight, Reigate),
missing only a 2 handicap.
Competitors were split into blocks of six (all-play-all) followed by a final round
where the top players from each block played off for first and second places, the
second players competed for third and fourth positions, and so forth. Block A was
won by Chris Heath, with four wins out of five, losing only to the manager. In block
B, Andrea Huxley and Ian Norris each finished on four wins, and had to be separated
by net points. Using this criterion, Andrea prevailed – she was also the only player
to beat Ian in the group stage – so advanced to the final.
So to the final round. Chris used his extra turns to very good effect and ran out
a comfortable winner. A very well-deserved first cup, to follow the medal he won
recently at Hamptworth.
All in all, an extremely enjoyable day’s croquet with some tight finishes – out of
the 36 games played during the day 10 went to the 13th hoop. Photo.....
Top six finishers: Chris Heath (G&G) Hcp 6; Andrea Huxley (G&G) Hcp 4; John Knight
(Reigate) Hcp 7; Ian Norris (Phyllis Court) Hcp 1; Mike Huxley (G&G) Hcp 3; Joan
West (G&G) Hcp 5 (MH)
19.06.14 Team A’s first match of the season The A team got off to what can only
be described as a faltering, but ultimately successful, start to the SECF Handicap
League against a strong Woking team. In beautiful sunny weather, the first two doubles
were shared. One game went to the 13th hoop, which was won by Julie T with a super
4 yarder. So, 1-1 after round 1. Four singles followed. Andrea H and Julie won theirs
in fairly quick time, putting G&G 3-1 up in the match. Unfortunately, Mike H and
Chris H were faring less well, and after the second round, the score was 3-3, with
a double and two singles left to be played. An out-of-sorts Mike contrived to lose
his singles, putting Woking ahead 4-3. That didn’t last long, as Andrea and Chris
won their double to level the score at 4-4.
Only one game still on court – Julie (handicap 9) against Woking’s captain (handicap
5). Everybody else was watching, fascinated, as the final game unfolded. At 3-3,
Julie had used 2 of her extra turns. She used the third extra turn on hoop 7 to clear
opponent and won the hoop to take a 4-3 lead. Even better was to come, as Julie put
in a determined and polished performance to take the next three hoops and close out
the game 7-3 (with an extra turn still unused). Wild applause from the rest of the
G&G team, of course.
Undoubted star of the day: Julie Tremble. Could do better: Team Captain.
Thanks to the team for all their efforts and to the Woking team for such stiff opposition.
A most enjoyable match against friendly and charming opponents. (MH)
Match Result: Guildford & Godalming 5 Woking 4 (51 hoops to 49)
14.06.14 U League For our first match in this year's tournament we entertained
Hampstead Heath at home and we faced one of the world's best lady players and two
rapid improvers. We were lucky to be able to avoid the heavy rain which obligingly
came during an excellent lunch laid on by Jennifer in the old bowls club shed. We
were 2-1 down after the morning's 2 singles and one doubles matches with only Barry
being able to win in the morning completing his game as time was called and having
conceded a veritable forest of bisques (14). However whilst the weather improved
for a nice sunny afternoon our luck didn't and we lost the afternoon session 3-1
with only Ian F winning and the team going down overall 5-2. One notable event was
Ian completing a 12 hoop break without bisques but as this wasn't a CA event he will
be unable to claim his silver award for his achievement. Our team was Barry G, Ian
F, and Mike T with Iain G honorary captain. (IG)
Match Result: Guildford & Godalming
2 Hampstead Heath 5
11.06.14 Longman Cup On a glorious mainly sunny day we entertained Roehampton in
the first round of the Longman cup. Our team was Arthur L, Mike T, Ian F and the
honorary captain was Barry G. Our opponents were entitled to a few bisques but we
felt that we had a good chance.
What went wrong? In the morning session Ian won quite quickly (26-9) but the rest
of us struggled. Mike lost to their second best player and our doubles pairing of
Arthur and Barry were rarely able to get going until Barry completed a long break
to peg near time to put us just two points behind. Unfortunately, they still had
bisques left and using these carefully they prevented Arthur from catching up!
After a lunch, produced by Jennifer and much appreciated by both sides, battle re-commenced.
Arthur won quickly (26-9) and Barry followed soon after (26-19). With the match score
3-2 in our favour we had a good chance but neither Mike nor Ian could overtake their
opponents in games that went to time. So the final score was 3-4 to Roehampton. (BG)
Match Result: Guildford & Godalming 3 Roehampton 4
05.06.14 Sunshine at Rother Valley Once again it was a beautifully sunny day, albeit
rather breezy, for our association friendly against Rother Valley. The lawns, professionally
maintained, were in good condition and as always the hosts gave us a warm welcome.
We were fielding a team biased to the lower end of the handicap range and so facing
quite a number of bisques; however, the games were well contested. Lunch outside
was a leisurely affair and, noting the time, it was agreed we’d play 18 pt singles
games in the afternoon. Guildford and Godalming won 3 of the 4 afternoon matches
resulting in a 6:1 win. A post-match afternoon tea was then enjoyed by all. The
team comprised: Arthur L, Barry G, Ian F and Jennifer F. The return match is on
Wednesday 30 July.
Match Result: Guildford & Godalming 6 Rother Valley 1
01.06.14 Murphy Shield This is the first year the Club has entered a team in the
Murphy Shield (a level play GC knockout competition) and our first match was away
to Hurlingham. The team comprised Tony M, Mike H, Mike T and Andrea H. Andrea reports
that they enjoyed a good day’s croquet playing in warm sunshine on super fast lawns
at Hurlingham Club. The format was for the team to play a double and two single matches
followed by four singles in the afternoon. Andrea comments, ‘Unfortunately we didn’t
all play to our best and the end result was 4 – 3 to Hurlingham. We’ll have to try
harder next year!’ Team photo.....
01.06.14 Another whisky tumbler for the collection Arthur Lindley was back on
form being runner-up in the Roehampton B-level tournament in a very closely-fought
competition. There were 22 competitors in all and after 6 rounds of Swiss there were
3 people (including Arthur) on 5 wins each. To sort these out, the manager first
looked at ‘who beat whom’ but, unusually, not everyone in this top group had played
the other two during the tournament, so that mechanism had to be abandoned in favour
of the ‘quality of wins’ mechanism - but this tally came out exactly equal for all
three players. The final option for deciding a winner was ‘net points scored’ with
Arthur being declared the runner-up. Photo.....
31.05.14 Success for Mike at Hamptworth Congratulations to Mike Huxley who won
the B-level GC Tournament at Hamptworth on Saturday winning all seven of his matches
and qualifying for the national final. The event was well supported by other members
of our club, some of whom were entering their first B-Level tournament.
19.05.14 Storage container arrives Our new storage container arrived on schedule
and was skillfully and gently lowered into place by the delivery driver. It will
be used to store all our lawn maintenance equipment and materials as well as additional
croquet equipment and the more domestic items like chairs, tables, stove, tent and
catering equipment. We will be transferring all the items from their separate locations
as soon as we can. Our grateful thanks to Sport England who generously provided
a grant from the Flood and Storm Relief Fund which has enabled us to purchase this
container to replace the storage shed we lost in the February storms. The benefits
of being able to store everything close to the lawns cannot be overstated. Photos.....
18.05.14 SECF AC Team Doubles Weekend at Southwick It was a weekend of mixed fortunes
for the seven players who made up our team on the Saturday and Sunday under Mark’s
captaincy. Ten teams competed for the trophy with six games being played on the
Saturday and four on the Sunday. Fielding a number of players with quite low handicaps
our players often faced opponents competently deploying fistfuls of bisques in shortened
games. Our team ended the weekend in fifth position with 6 wins out of the 10 matches
they played. The full report is published on the SECF website. Photo.....
13.05.14 A good start to the season for Team B in the SECF Golf Handicap League.
Mike T reports that Team B won their first match of the 2014 season playing away
to Littlehampton A. Congratulations to all members of the team.
Match Result: Guildford & Godalming 5 Littlehampton 4
11.05.14 Open Challenge Cup Tony reports that Dr Simon Hathrell (-1) stood out
winning all his six games in the wind and showers over two days. Photo.....
11.05.14 Winchester One-ball Charity Tournament Stephen SM reports that he had a
lovely day at Winchester but unfortunately another chance to win slipped away. Stephen
had won 4 out of 4 games by lunchtime but in the afternoon faced a storm of bisques
and finished on 5 out of 8.
27.04.14 One-ball Qualifier for Winchester One-ball Charity Tournament Not deterred
by the weather eight members competed for the One-ball trophy and the opportunity
to qualify for the Winchester Tournament. Intermittent rain, minute hailstones and
occasional incursions of rugby balls and players were ignored. In the all play all
competition as Stephen SM drew ahead it soon became clear that he had made an excellent
recovery from the injuries he sustained in a skiing accident. He went on to win
the competition and will be playing at Winchester on 11 May where we wish him every
success. Our thanks to Mike H who managed the competition and will have the detailed
27.04.14 Success at Hamptworth Congratulations to Chris Heath on his recent success
in winning a Hamptworth C-Level Golf Croquet Tournament (level play). Chris is the
first member of our club to receive one of the new Hamptworth medals. Spurred on
by his success Chris will be competing in a B-Level Golf Tournament in May coming
up against Andrea and perhaps MikeH.
24.04.14 Delegation is the art of management The hire firm delivered the seeder
as promised; quite a beast of a machine by all accounts with a mind of its own when
it came to turning. Arthur duly whistled up son Adam to help and thanks to their
efforts the area for the new lawns was seeded and the bowls green re-seeded. Our
grateful thanks to Adam and Arthur. Hopefully Adam will be able to enjoy a game
on the new lawns next season. Photo of Adam at work.....
17.04.14 A team effort The area for the new lawns had been mown and mown again
ready for the contractors to scarify, but for the second time they let us down. Nothing
daunted Arthur brought out Sisis (our elderly convalescent scarifier) and firmly
coaxed her round the area not once but twice. He was ably assisted by a team of
16 members and a spouse who raked and barrowed with a will. Other members supplied
most welcome refreshments. By midday the task was completed and everyone headed off
for a well earned shower. Photos.....
17.02.14 What a blow Well the dire warnings that the shed was on its last legs
were not wholly unfounded but who would have predicted that it would take wing and
head for the crematorium under its own steam. On Saturday, in spite of the continuing
inclement weather, our rapid response team comprising Mike T, Mike H and Tony M
leaped into action and salvaged the main contents stowing the larger items into the
machinery container and the smaller ones and chairs into the secure cabinet. The
other items had to be left to their fate. Monday saw the ‘wrecking’ team of Arthur
and son Adam, cheered on by Ian and Jennifer, deliver the coup de grace before the
cortege set off at a stately pace for a funeral pyre in Thursley. Photos.....
********** 2013 *********
10/12/13 Christmas Lunch There was an excellent turnout for our Christmas Lunch
which this year was held at a new venue, Piazza Firenze. Members enjoyed the festive
menu which was a change from a traditional English one and no one seemed to really
miss the Christmas Pudding. It was an opportunity to catch up with those players
who have otherwise gone into hibernation for the winter and for some of our newer
members to chat to some they may not have met on the lawns.
22/10/13 End of Season Social and Awards Evening Andrea and Mike kindly hosted this
occasion once again. Members and partners enjoyed a bring and share buffet and raised
their glasses to congratulate the winners of our association and golf croquet competitions.
Tony M presented the trophies and prizes and in the process collected a trophy on
behalf of himself and his doubles partner, Mark, who was unable to attend. Iain G
, Andrea and Stephen SM also won awards. Everyone did justice to the buffet which
demonstrated the excellent culinary skills of members.
29/09/13 Manager wins the competition! A dozen or so members turned out to contest
the traditional End of Season 7-point Golf Croquet competition. Games were hotly
contested with many going to 4:3. The weather was fine enough for a picnic lunch
after which play continued till about 4 pm. At the end of play Mark G and Ian F
were equal on the number of wins but Mark emerged victorious when hoops were taken
into consideration. Fortunately Tony, our President, was on hand to award the prize
23/09/13 SECF Golf Team B v Cheyney Just two days after their match against Reigate
Priory our Team B turned out for another match, this time against Cheyney. There
was just one change to the team with Mike T playing in place of Barry. It was a
close match but at the end of the day it went to Cheyney by 1 game. This was the
last match of the season for the team as apparently the match against Sussex County
(Southwick) is not going to be played.
Match Result: Guildford & Godalming 4 Cheyney 5
21/09/13 Golf Team B demonstrate their form. This was only the second match of the
season for our SECF Golf Team B who were playing at home against Reigate Priory.
The weather was cloudy but fortunately stayed dry. Barry teamed up with Stefanie
for one doubles and notes that she saved them several times before the game was won
on the last hoop. In the same round Jay and Amanda were unlucky to lose their doubles
on hoop 12 in what looked like a tight match. Barry reports that a quick coffee break
woke everyone up to the extent that we won all 4 of the singles games! Barry modestly
forgot to mention that, giving away 5 extra turns, he put in a decisive performance
to win his singles game 7-1. The match continued with a doubles and two singles.
This time Barry formed a new partnership with Amanda, who was playing with great
confidence, and the pair achieved another win! This was quickly followed by two wins
by Jay and Stefanie in the singles. Barry summed up the match saying ‘We had won
by 8 vs 1 - a great team effort. We quickly tidied everything away and still arrived
at the Manor Inn by 1 pm!’.
Match Result: Guildford & Godalming 8 Reigate Priory 1
17/09/13 A soggy end to the season, to say the least! The Golf Handicap League A
squad played its final match away to Worthing on 17 September. Conditions were somewhat
unfamiliar to us – three quarter size courts, very wide hoops that were loose in
their sockets and incessant rain. The rain started half an hour before the match,
continued throughout the match and stopped an hour after it finished. The match itself
was nip and tuck the whole way - the opening two doubles were shared, then the four
singles were shared. But in the final round of two singles and one double, Worthing
pinched it on the 13th hoop of the final game. So the result was 5-4 to Worthing.
A splendid tea provided by the home club rounded off the afternoon. I guess we enjoyed
some aspects of the match – not least the friendly and welcoming opponents - but
the rain was depressingly constant and we were glad to get out of it!
So our season came to an end with 2 wins and 2 losses. No trophy this year, but four
enjoyable matches. Thank you Julie, Joan, Andrea and Charles for all your efforts,
and roll on next year!
Season statistics: Games won: 21, games lost: 15. Hoops won: 211, hoops lost: 198.
Perhaps the most telling statistic – extra turns received: 6, extra turns given:
117. It gets a bit tough playing handicap! (MH)
Match Result: Guildford & Godalming 4 Worthing 5
14/09/13 SECF U League v Caterham This was the final U League match of the season
with the visitors arriving in time for a 9.30 am start. Unusually the lawns were
slightly squelchy after heavy rain but soon dried out and proved of reasonable speed.
Fears of further heavy rain were unfounded. Arthur and Audrey, playing doubles together
for the first time, produced a winning combination but the two singles matches went
to Caterham. So by lunchtime we were two one down. With the start of the rugby season
the clubhouse was packed but a quiet oasis had been provided for the croquet match
lunch and the teams were able to relax before the afternoon matches. Caterham then
built on their earlier successes winning three of the four singles games; Audrey
continued on form to win her singles match.
Match Result: Guildford & Godalming 2 Caterham 5
11/09/13 SECF U League League v Rother Valley The G & G Team unfortunately got off
to a poor start against Rother Valley, with Tony and Mike losing a close-fought game
of doubles against Nancy Allen and David Smith; Barry only just losing to David Boyd
by one point, and Arthur losing rather more substantially to Christ Coote.
However, an excellent cold lunch, set out in the main clubhouse, clearly inspired
at least some of our team members in the afternoon set of singles games, with Arthur
winning against Nancy by 19 points, and Mike beating David Smith by 8. Sadly, though,
Tony wasn't able to overcome the bunch of bisques which helped David Boyd to win
by 25, while Barry, having an early lead, saw his opponent Chris Coote take advantage
of his bisques to set up and complete some substantial breaks, winning in the end
by 8. (AL)
Match Result: Guildford & Godalming 2 Rother Valley 5
01/09/13 Intermediate & High Bisquers Tournament Competitors came from as far away
as York to take part in this weekend tournament for players with a handicap of 10+.
The weather was fine and the lawns fast. For the first time this tournament was
played from base 10 and all competitors had at least one bisque. It was pleasing
to see more female than male competitors but at the end of the tournament it was
John Knight from Reigate who was presented with the Chapman Challenge Tropy by GGCC
President, Tony Mrozinski. (Photo)
30/08/13 Sparkling performance from Team A. G&G’s Golf Croquet Team A were on sparkling
form in their match against Chichester & Fishbourne. The opening round of two doubles
went comfortably to G&G. It was then the round of four singles. Last on court was
Mike Huxley, who was engaged in something of a titanic struggle against Chichester
& Fishbourne’s Brian Shipman. Using his 5 extra turns, Brian gained a lead of 6-3,
only for Mike to fight back and pinch the game 7-6. After such a lengthy game, Mike
discovered to his delight that all three other singles had also gone to G&G. That
made the score 6-0 and the match was won. The final round of two singles and one
double yielded two points for G&G and one for Chichester and Fishbourne, making the
final score 8-1.
A splendid morning’s play, with extremely friendly opponents, was rounded off by
an excellent lunch in the clubhouse, courtesy of Jennifer and Stefanie. Many thanks
J & S! (MH)
Match Result: Guildford & Godalming 8 Chichester & Fishbourne 1
25/08/13 Sports for All at Farnham Joan and David generously volunteered to man
a stand at this event for the second year. They reported that they were kept busy
throughout the event with lots of families keen for their children to have a go at
croquet but with the adults needing a little more persuasion. Joan was so busy that
it was only when David pointed it out that she realised she had been helping Jeremy
Hunt’s party to try the game. Photo of the practice ‘lawn’!
21/08/13 Mid-Surrey Federation of Townswomen’s Guilds Once again we had pleasure
in hosting the Mid-Surrey Federation of Townswomen’s Guilds annual croquet tournament.
In contrast to the previous year the sun shone brilliantly throughout the day and
the picnic lunch was a more leisured affair. 16 teams played an impressive total
of 124 games and as the afternoon progressed two teams were in contention for first
place. The Smarties (Lorna & Jill) with a straight set of wins just managed to moved
ahead of Team FJ (Faith & Jan) by close of play and so secured the trophy. The Variety
Girls (Viv & Irene) put in a creditable performance to take third place. Rumour has
it that one member of the winning team can be seen regularly on a croquet lawn....

19/08/13 The MARE Cup 2013 - This was the club’s first venture into hosting a level
play Golf Croquet tournament – a B-level restricted to those with handicaps 2 to
7. Andrea and Mike Huxley kindly donated a new trophy. Mike, who managed the tournament,
exercised his grey cells calculating the results whilst Andrea had the pleasurable
task of presenting the cup to David Bell.
10/08/13 SECF U League League - Reigate Priory have been GGCC's nemesis on many previous
occasions. They came to a wonderfully sunny but windy day and reasonably fast lawns.
The morning went exceedingly well - we won all 3 games. The doubles win was thanks
to a late break by Ian - who went from hoop 4 to peg putting us 1 point ahead with
10 minutes to go. Reigate scored the equaliser after time - and then Mark was able
to score the golden hoop to give a +1(T) win. I would love to comment on the other
games - but we won them convincingly well before the doubles was over.
The afternoon games were shared 2-2, although Ian was again involved in a nail biting
finish. He achieved a position of peg-rover, well ahead, but with the oppo having
4 bisques still standing. The final result was a + 3 win, when Ian managed to hit
in after what seemed like an eternity of very narrow misses.
Well done to the team for the 5-2 win - Stephen, Robert, Ian and Mark. Thanks again
to Jennifer for the lunchtime catering. (MG)
Match Result: Guildford & Godalming 5 Reigate Priory A 2
06/08/13 Bitten Nails All Round! Mike H reports on the SECF Golf Handicap League
match between Team A and Angmering.
Match Result: Guildford & Godalming 5 Angmering 4
04/08/13 SECF Golf Handicap Team Doubles and Singles - this was the first time Guilford
& Godalming had entered the SECF team doubles and singles held at Southwick. Intending
to enter one team enthusiasm was such that when we were invited to enter a second
team we had no problem forming a further team. 22 teams competed in the separate
singles and doubles competitions. In the event it was the second team (Mike T, Tony
M, Audrey P, Alison C) that played consistently to come 2nd in both the doubles and
the singles whilst our other team (Mike H, Andrea H, Jay B, Amanda B) came 5th in
the singles. No silver to polish on this occasion but overall the club did well.
31/07/13 World class players visit the club - Stephen Mulliner, club member and international
player, dropped by the club with two young Australian players, Malcolm and Robert
Fletcher, for a short practice session after their long flight. All three are competing
in the AC World Championships taking place later this month.
31/07/13 Yet another success for Guildford & Godalming - not to be outdone by Andrea
and Arthur our association team showed that they too could win all 7 games in a friendly
against Rother Valley. Man of the match was Alan B who, having returned from a sabbatical
and declaring himself rusty, produced a 12-hoop break gaining well deserved admiration
from both the opposition and fellow team members. The other members of the team were
Audrey P, Ian F and Mike T.
Match Result: Guildford & Godalming 7 Rother Valley 0
28/07/13 Another trophy from Nottingham Following on from Andrea's success at golf
croquet earlier in July, Arthur Lindley won the Nottingham Club's C-Level Association
Croquet Tournament at the weekend. Arthur achieved 100% winning all 5 of his games
to take the Eclipse Goblet. Arthur reports that for this tournament (restricted
to Handicaps 4-9, played to Advanced rules with narrow, championship-style hoops)
games were hard-fought; but flat, even-paced lawns gave everyone the chance to play
to the best of their ability. Congratulations to Arthur.
27/07/13 Catenians Croquet Afternoon We had pleasure hosting an afternoon of croquet
for 18 members from Guildford Catenians. Eight 2-member teams took part in an informal
competition ably supported by lawn stewards Anthony, Ian and Mike T. A light misting
of rain did not deter players and fortunately the heavy rain held off until the competition
was finished and guests were crossing to the clubhouse for a well-earned supper.
22/07/13 GGCC B-level Advanced Weekend - David Boyd, former member of GGCC, won the
Frank Rendall Trophy with Stephen Harbron a very close runner up. (Photo)
17/07/13 Andrea wins her first trophy - congratulations to Andrea Huxley who won
the Nottingham B-level golf croquet tournament on Wednesday 17 July remaining unbeaten
after seven games. Not only was it her first trophy win but she is now eligible for
the B-Level series National to be held at Hamptworth on 12 October.
09/07/13 SECF U League League - Our first AC SECF U-League match was away to Surbiton
who put out a strong team. The lawns were fast. At lunch the score was 2-1 in Surbiton's
favour thanks to a convincing win by Arthur L. The other singles player was Andrew
F who was slowly worn down by his opponent as were the doubles pair of Ian F and
Barry G. After a good lunch we were hopeful that we could improve on the morning
performance but it was not to be. As the afternoon progressed each of us lost although
our last man standing, Ian, had a good break to finish when time was called but he
could not overtake his opponent. So a very disappointing start in the U-League. (BG)
Match Result: Guildford & Godalming 1 Surbiton 6
01/07/13 SECF Golf League: Team B at home to West Worthing - Guildford and Godalming
Team B welcomed the visiting team and their supporters in their first league match
of the season. Play started in the early afternoon with two rounds being played before
a break for afternoon tea in the clubhouse. At tea time Guildford and Godalming
were just ahead and the third and final round saw the lead increase. Congratulations
to the members of Team B: Mike T, Barry G, Audrey P and Stefanie B - the last member
making her debut as a team member.
Match Result: Guildford & Godalming 7 West Worthing 2
29/06/13 Guildford and Godalming Golf Croquet Handicap Tournament - GGCC hosted its
first Golf Croquet Handicap Tournament at the weekend. Mike Huxley presented Janet
Trueman (Hamptworth) with the new trophy ‘PJ’s Pot’ kindly donated by Andrea and
Mike Huxley. (Photos)
25/06/13 Croquet by Candlelight - arrangements were well in hand to move this event
indoors but once again we struck lucky with a fine dry evening. Members and guests
played golf croquet before pausing to do justice to the very fine ‘bring and share’
buffet they had provided. The lawns beckoned once again and now Pirates took over
until the light was too poor to see and play came to a halt.
19/06/13 SECF Golf League: Team A at home to Dogmersfield - Team Captain, Mike H,
summarised the match as ‘a super day’s croquet with a somewhat dramatic ending, unfortunately.’
The winner was in question right to the end as the two teams contested the match
through the morning and into the afternoon. Our team played well, as can be seen
from the scores, but it was Dogmersfield that finally managed to clinch the match.
Match Result: Guildford and Godalming 4 Dogmersfield 5 with 52 and 55 hoops respectively.
08/06/13 Longman Cup Hopes of making a comeback this year in the Longman Cup were
dashed following our match against Merton on Saturday. The weather was favourable
with brilliant sunshine tempered by a cool breeze and the lawns were fine. Guildford
and Godalming had a disappointing start to the match losing all 3 games in the morning
so by lunchtime we were three down with four matches to play in the afternoon. Our
team rallied in the afternoon but were not able to clinch all four games, and so
with the deciding game going to the visitors it is Merton who go through to the next
Match Result: Guildford and Godalming 3 Merton 4.
06/06/13 Association Friendly against Rother Valley - It was a beautiful sunny day
with a welcome light breeze for our friendly match at Rother Valley. The lawns were
in good condition and the hosts gave us a warm welcome. Two doubles and four singles
matches were played; our team was very content with winning the match 5 games to
1. The hospitality was excellent and the post-match afternoon tea was enjoyed by
all. The team comprised: Audrey P, Barry G, Ian F and Jennifer F. The return match
is on Wednesday 31 July.
19/05/13 SECF Association Team Doubles - Eleven teams of four entered this two-day
event. Guildford & Godalming won five of their matches, achieved 26 points and came
sixth overall. Barry reports: “The SECF doubles tournament was very close this year
with no team being dominant. We started well with both our pairs, AndrewF with MikeT,
and ArthurL with BarryG, winning their first games - we were winning! It didn't last
as we then lost the rest of our games on the Saturday. On Sunday TonyM and StephenSM
replaced Andrew and Mike. We won 3 of our 4 games - the best Sunday performance,
but it was not quite enough. The winners, Medway, only got one more point on the
Sunday - against us - if we had won, as we very nearly did, then the trophy would
have been ours!”
12/05/13 Winchester One-ball Charity Tournament - Sadly Joan, suffering an unwelcome
attack of sciatica, was unable to go to Winchester. Graham Gale, playing off -1 following
the Westerns, stepped forward and was quietly confident and hopeful heading to Winchester.
As he said in his report ‘How wrong I was.’. A combination of not playing his best
and conditions (especially loose, wide hoops), meant that any intimidation factor
his handicap might have instilled in his opponents was nullified. However, the competitors
proved good company, Winchester Club was most hospitable and £3000 was raised for
Prostrate Cancer, this year’s charity, which as Graham points out is surely the point
of the event. Graham summed up ‘In conclusion, never have I enjoyed an entirely
losing day of croquet quite as much.’.
21/04/13 One-ball Tournament -Sixty pounds was raised for the prostate cancer charity
when twelve members competed to be the person to qualify for the Winchester One-ball
Handicap Charity Tournament in May. Congratulations go to Joan W who, with an apparently
effortless performance, for the second time in recent years emerged as the clear
winner. The sunshine and fine weather were appreciated by all and our thanks go
to Mike Huxley, tournament manager, for organising the event.
04/13 Winter Golf Handicap League 2012-13 Congratulations to Charles M who has won
this competition for the second year running. Twenty members originally signed up
to play in the Winter League but the weather proved too cold for several prospective
players and the competition was finally contested by fourteen members who piled on
the layers and competed throughout the winte Jennifer F was runner up with Ian F
and Mike T hot on her heels. Andrea H set everyone an example by playing the most
matches despite not being able to play in the final weeks.
27/02/13 Secure storage on the lawns - I am pleased to report that the new secure
storage container has been assembled and brought into use today. Arthur L (with a
fearsome array of tools) and Tony took the lead construction roles, ably supported
by Jennifer, Ian F and Mike T. Three hours later and with the sun shining Arthur
and Mike even had sufficient energy for a game of croquet. Photos
21/02/13 AGM Date change - the AGM will now be held on Thursday, 14 March 2013 at
7.30 pm in the clubhouse.

05/12/12 Christmas Lunch The annual Christmas Lunch was once again held at the
Inn on the Lake. Magically the first snow of the season fell in the morning to put
members in the mood. On a more practical note it was fortunate that it had thawed
in the bright sunshine by lunchtime so members had no difficulty negotiating the
steep car park and were able to relax and enjoy a leisurely meal.
18/10/12 Guildford and Godalming A Team win the SECF Golf Croquet Handicap League
2012 - The results of the 2012 SECF leagues were announced today and confirmed that
G & G A Team won the Golf Croquet Handicap League.
16/10/12 End of Season Social and Presentation of Awards On Tuesday evening members
and guests enjoyed a ‘bring and share buffet’ kindly hosted by Andrea and Mike at
their home. Following the meal Mike presented trophies to the winners of the internal
competitions and then brought members up to date on the club’s performance in SECF
10/10/12 Lawn Improvement Programme - All four lawns were scarified today thanks
to the great kindness of Duncan Hector who drove over from Letchworth to lend us
two lawn tractors with a scarifier and collector. Not only did Duncan leave home
at 5.00 am but he also put in a full day’s work with the tractors before setting
off for home in the evening rush hour. Arthur efficiently organised his press gang
to pile the detritus into two long ‘barrows’ and he and Tony got to play with the
tractors. The rest of the press gang refused the offer to drive the tractors realising
that they could not match Tony’s standard. Our greatful thanks to Duncan Hector
without whose input we would not have been able to achieve so much in such a short
time. Thanks are also due to Arthur and Tony for implementing the lawn improvement
programme and to the ‘volunteers’ who undertook the less glamorous but no less essential
Next steps - re-seeding the lawns week beginning 15 October.
26/09/12 SECF Association U League - The final U League match of the season was
played at home against Purley Bury on Friday, 28 September, the home team winning
the match by 1 game.
It has been a season of mixed outcomes for Guildford & Godalming in the U League.
Of the 4 matches to be played our team has won 2, lost 1 and conceded 1.
Match Result: Guildford and Godalming 4 Purley Bury 3.
18/09/12 All England Handicap Tournament - 15 & 16 September 2012
Two members of our Club, Ian Fugeman and Stephen Stuart-Matthews, qualified for
the final held at Ramsgate over the weekend. Not only were the lawns in perfect condition
but on the Saturday the sun shone throughout the day and the breeze was moderate.
At the end of play on Saturday both Ian and Stephen qualified for the semi-finals
each winning all three matches in their respective blocks. On Sunday the lawns were
still fine but the weather was overcast and there was a strong chill wind blowing
off the sea which caused problems for some players. Stephen and Ian were in different
halves of the semi-final. Stephen won his semi-final decisively 26+ but Ian, who
had been well ahead, made an error which his opponent took full advantage of going
on to win +2. The final saw Stephen meeting Charlie Martin from the host club and,
although Stephen received two rounds of applause for brilliant shots, on this occasion
the match went to Charlie Martin with the result +16. There was a long wait for the
play off for third place to finish, once again Ian was well ahead but a blobbed hoop
let his opponent in to hoover up the hoops and draw level. As Ian got in time went
and then his opponent played his last turn and took a final hoop to win +1. Mention
must be made of the Mayor and Mayoress of Ramsgate who sat for over 3 hours facing
the wind and who still had smiles on their faces when they presented the trophy.
13/09/12 SECF Golf Croquet Handicap League - Congratulations to the A Team on a
Mike H reports ‘The Golf Croquet A squad played their final SECF Golf Croquet Handicap
League match on Thursday, 13 September against Surbiton.
Match result: Guildford & Godalming A 8 Surbiton 1.
07/09/12 Woking One-day Golf Handicap Tournament Congratulations to Mike H who
won this tournament with 5 wins out of 6 matches. Andrea H goes from strength to
strength and her performance in the tournament was such that her handicap has gone
down to 4.
05/09/12 SECF Golf Croquet Handicap League Guildford and Godalming B Team played
Dogmersfield at home in brilliant sunshine. The match got off to a hesitant start
when one member of the home team was unable to make it and another member had to
be found to replace them. Dogmersfield were understanding but the home team were
clearly wrong footed.
Match Result: Guildford and Godalming 3 Dogmersfield 6.
02/09/12 All England Association Handicap Area Final - 1 & 2 September Three members
from Guildford & Godalming qualified for the area finals this year. With 5 wins
from the 5 games played, Ian Fugeman came out a clear winner at the Area Final, held
at Compton Club in Eastbourne this past weekend. Stephen Stuart-Matthews, with 3
wins, will also be one of the top 4 from this Area Final to go forward to the All
England Final at Ramsgate on 15 & 16 September. Best of luck to them both! [AL] Photo
29/08/12 Mid-Surrey Federation of Townswomen’s Guilds Thirty-three TWG members
and relatives disregarded the threat of rain and turned out in force for their annual
croquet tournament. Fifteen teams competed for the impressive trophy and play became
brisker as the rain clouds gathered. Rain finally halted play around 12.30 and our
guests squeezed into the tent for lunch. As it became clear that the weather was
not going to clear, the results were calculated and Gill Martin presented the cup
to the winning team.

28/08/12 SECF Association U League The Bank Holiday saw our team (Mike T, Arthur
L, Barry G and Tony M) play our first U League match of the season against Ealing.
They made a successful start with a 5:2 win over the visiting team.
Match Result: Guildford and Godalming 5 Ealing 2.
23/08/12 SECF Golf Croquet Handicap League The A squad maintained their winning
run in the SECF Golf Croquet Handicap League on Thursday 23 August. This time, the
visitors were Parsons Green, unusually fielding a team entirely composed of players
with an 8 handicap. Nevertheless, with excellent fighting displays, the final score

18/08/12 Hurlingham Annual Tournament Congratulations to club members Robert Bateson
and Arthur Lindley who took first and second prizes respectively in the Class Singles
event, ‘C-level’ section, at Hurlingham this week. Robert, with 6 out of 7 wins,
took the trophy, the Younger Cup – which has an almost continuous record of winners
since the 1920s. Arthur, with 5 out of 7 wins, took 2nd prize. As a result both
Robert and Arthur also achieved handicap reductions to 4½ and 5 respectively. Photos

04/08/12 Friendly against Rother Valley After light showers in the morning the
weather stayed fine for the return association match against Rother Valley on I August
2012. Although the croquet was competitive it was a very relaxed occasion with a
buffet lunch on the lawns and tea and cake to finish the day. Each team fielded one
member playing in their first external association match; hopefully the first of
many for each of them. On this occasion the result went to the home team with Guildford
and Godalming winning 5 to 2. As players sat chatting after the match the clouds
gathered and rain threatened; once our visitors were homeward bound the team sprang
into action in boy scout mode to dismantle the tent before the rain.
24/07/12 SECF Golf Croquet Handicap League Guildford and Godalming A made it two
wins out of two so far in the SECF Golf Croquet League. After the nail-biting away
win at Ealing last month, today’s match was slightly more comfortable. G & G won
both the opening doubles and then proceeded to take all four singles in the second
round, to lead 6-0. The match was therefore won after two rounds. In the final round
of one double and two singles, Rother Valley rallied somewhat and took two of the
three games. (MH)
Match Result: Guildford and Godalming 7 Rother Valley 2.
19/06/12 Croquet by Candlelight We were unbelievably fortunate that amidst the spell
of heavy rain and strong winds the weather turned clear and fine on the day of the
Croquet by Candlelight social. Thirty members and guests played golf croquet and
MikeT was seen demonstrating his skill with the one-handed grip, the other being
reserved for the wine glass. A splendid bring and share buffet was enjoyed by all
and then as the sun set and the light died members took to the lawns to play Pirates.
A fierce, fast and highly competitive game was played on Lawn 4 till long after dark
as the competitors tried to foil Andrew’s success. Lamps and lanterns glowed softly
but the ‘official photographer ‘ became so involved in the game of Pirates that there
were no photos to record the scene.
18/06/12 SECF Golf Croquet Handicap League Our Team A made a successful start in
their first match of the season, narrowly beating Ealing.
Match Result: Guildford and Godalming 5 Ealing 4.
09/06/12 Longman Team Cup On 8 June, in appalling weather, with gale-force winds
and driving rain (though thankfully not quite as much rain as had been forecast)
the G & G team of Robert Bateson, Mike Thompson, Andrew Fewster and Arthur Lindley
battled - unsuccessfully - against a team of experienced players from Woking in the
preliminary round of the Longman Cup - the competition that G & G won last year.
All players struggled to overcome conditions in which the ball would travel twice
as far with the wind as against it, and swing over a foot to one side on a long shot
in a cross-wind - not to mention both the player and the mallet head swaying in
the wind too. But in the end Woking proved more the masters of the conditions, and
won by 5 games to 2.
So now, being out of the national inter-club tournament, we must concentrate our
efforts on the South-East Croquet Federation League, and hope for better success
Friendly at Rother Valley A friendly match at Rother Valley Croquet Club was played
on 7 June but unfortunately had to be abandoned at midday when the lawns became flooded.
A double and two singles were played resulting in a 1 : 2 defeat. With a win to each
side in the singles and with the doubles match approaching the time limit on an even
score a nail biting finale occurred. After time had been called Mike made a valiant
attempt to approach his opponent’s ball down the length of the lawn but was hampered
by the surface water. Rother then ran the winning hoop.

02/04/12 2012 Summer Season
The season got off to a good start on Sunday afternoon when 17 members turned out
to play association and golf croquet. The weather was beautiful, the lawns fast and
the white lines dazzling in the sunshine. Thanks to Tony and Mike for preparing
and setting out the lawns for the start of the new season.
Winter Golf Handicap League Results
Twenty-one members competed in the 2011-12 Winter Golf Handicap League with a total
of 166 matches played between October and March. Charles Martin was awarded the
prize for the highest percentage of matches won, with Ian Fugeman coming a close
second. The prize for playing the most matches went to Joan West with husband David
hot on her heels. Congratulations to Charles on winning his first event and to Joan
who encouraged so many members to turn up and play throughout the winter. The prizes
were presented by Mike Huxley. Photos...

07/12/11 Christmas Lunch - nineteen members met for Christmas Lunch at the Inn on
the Lake. The weather would have been perfect for a game of croquet but nonetheless
members enjoyed the meal and those who were hibernating for the winter season also
had an opportunity to catch up with the hardier ones who continue to play in the
02/10/11 Triumph in the Longman Club Team Cup 2011 for Guildford & Godalming. Saturday
saw the team of Mark Godfrey (captain), Arthur Lindley, Mike Thompson and Stephen
Stuart Matthews defeat Ealing in the semi-final at Surbiton. This was the second
time the club had reached the final and on Sunday the same team met Nottingham. At
lunchtime Guildford & Godalming were 2-1 down but tension rose as the teams came
level at 3-3 later in the afternoon with just one game to complete. It was a nail
biting time as scores in this last game were level as time was called. All eyes were
on the players, the captain telephoned a running commentary back to the club as in
the closing moments Mike Thompson clinched matters winning the game on the ‘golden
hoop’. Congratulations to the team on winning our first national competition and
also to Andrew Fewster, Robert Bateson and Ian Fugeman who played in the earlier
rounds which enabled the club to reach the semi-finals.
