05.06.19 Murphy Shield Congratulations to our Murphy Team on reaching the quarter
finals. They beat beat Cheam in a closely contested match and go on to meet Hamptworth.
To see how this was achieved please see the Manager’s Report. (Manager’s full report)
Match result: Guildford & Godalming 4 Cheam 3
04.06.19 SECF GC Handicap League Team B The second match of the season was away to
Littlehampton. The weather was inauspicious and adjusting to the unfamiliar lawns
an issue; however G & G played on. Details of the team and full report can be found
on the GC SECF page.
Match result: Guildford & Godalming 3 Littlehampton 6 (SECF League Results) (Full
01.06.19 SECF U League As last year Hampstead Heath fielded a team including players
of national standard with handicaps of -1½ and +½ who coped with the demanding lawns
on the hottest day of the year with ease. With one match left to finish a result
of 5:2 or 4:3 was in the balance with both Stephen and Phil close to pegging out.
Time sounded with Stephen one point ahead; Phil came on, ran the last hoop to make
it even and then hit the peg with his rover ball forgetting that in Handicap play
both balls must be rover. Stephen returned to the lawn and seized the opportunity
to score and win the game.
Match result: Guildford & Godalming 3 Hampstead Heath 4 (SECF League Results)
30.05.19 Fred qualifies for GC All England Handicap Congratulations to Fred, who
won the qualifying tournament to represent the club at the All England GC Handicap
Area finals. It was a closely fought tournament, decided by the result of the last
match. With 4 of the competitors on 3 wins out of 5, the winner was only declared
after net hoops were calculated. HB (Photo)
20.05.19 SECF GC Handicap League Team B The team played its first match of the season
against Lodsworth and with the teams well matched the games were more closely contested
than the overall results suggest.
Match result: Guildford & Godalming 3 Lodsworth 6 (SECF League Results) (Report)
19.05.19 SECF Team Doubles Eight teams competed in this year’s AC team doubles weekend
hosted by Southwick. Each team played 10 matches with 5 of the teams achieving 6
wins, Medway emerged as overall winner on the basis of additional criteria. Guildford
and Godalming won 3 matches but the team enjoyed the weekend with good weather on
12.05.19 Charity One-ball Final Stephen reports that this year a record sum of £6,000
was raised for Alzheimers charity. Sadly the trophy eluded Stephen once again; however,
he won a bottle of bubbly as the competitor with the highest two ball break of the
day (9 points). So no dusting of the decanter this year but rather a relaxing evening
glass in hand.
05.05.19 The Guildford and Godalming Open Tournament (Advanced Association) Congratulations
to Jamie Burch who successfully defended his title against 13 other competitors over
the weekend tournament. Jamie had a clean sweep winning all his matches.
05.05.19 Murphy Shield Guildford and Godalming have gone through to the next round
of the competition having beaten Watford 5 matches to 2. They will meet either Cheam
or Hurlingham in the next round. (Manager’s full report)
19.04.19 Longman Cup Golden Hoop Our first round match was away to Bristol on Good
Friday with clear blue skies and temperatures in the 20s. Matches were double banked
and with a 3¼ hour time limit the majority went to time. At lunch having won a singles
and the doubles the score was 2:1 to Guildford, with 4 singles still to play the
result could go either way. By late afternoon Bristol were holding their own and
the timers for all games were sounding; Chris then won his singles match but Bristol
won two others so with just one game left to finish it was 3 games each. All eyes
turned to the final match - the timer had rung and the players’ scores were equal.
A tense few minutes followed as each player tried again and again to gain a final
point until Ian, keeping his cool and a steady hand, achieved the golden hoop to
win the game and so the match. Congratulations to the team of: Chris, Ian, Iain
13.04.19 One-ball Charity Qualifier Wearing blue in support of this year’s charity,
the Alzheimer’s Society, competitors enjoyed a day’s croquet with the result still
in contention to the last round. Stephen, a many times previous winner, finally managed
to win through by a single point to close contenders Ian and Anthony, last year’s
winner. (Manager’s full report) (Photos)
06.04.19 Applewood Bowl The summer competition season once again opened with the
Applewood Bowl, a friendly association croquet competition comprising 2 games of
One-Ball and 2 games of 14 point advanced rules handicap. It was anticipated that
the competition would be fiercely defended by last year’s winner, Stephen, but unfortunately
he had to pull out at the last minute. At the end of the One-ball stage several competitors
were on level pegging with 2 wins apiece but following the first association game
one competitor, Anthony, had pulled ahead with 3 wins. With the final game to play
after lunch and 3 competitors on 2 wins the competition was still open. Anthony maintained
his lead by winning his final game and so the trophy. Competitors thanked Arthur
for organising the event and expressed appreciation for the homemade rock buns which
fortified them in the rather chilly weather. (Photo)
01.04.19 2018-19 GC Winter Handicap League Congratulations to Julie on winning the
Winter Handicap League despite the number of bisques she often faced against her
opponents. The other close contenders were Chris, demonstrating his consistency in
hoop-running, and Jan and Fred who played the most games with good win and hoop percentages.
26.03.19 Briefing on the 5th Edition of Golf Croquet Rules Andrea and Mike kindly
ran two briefing sessions on the key changes to the Golf Croquet Rules which came
into effect on 1 March. The sessions were well attended and provided an opportunity
for members not only to be briefed on the changes but also to raise any other queries
they had on the rules. Mike provided a handy reference card. Our thanks to Andrea
and Mike for these useful sessions.
25.03.19 2018-19 GC Winter Level Play League Congratulations to Charles on winning

24.09.18 Joan West
Mike Huxley writes:
“I am deeply sorry to report that Joan died on Friday. She passed on peacefully in
a nursing home in Farnham, where she had been for a few weeks.
As an ex-golfer, Joan had a very keen eye for line on the croquet court and often
surprised players with much lower handicaps than the 6(GC) that she maintained into
her nineties. But, of course, croquet was only a small part of her life as she had
an extended family about whom she spoke frequently with love and pride.
I guess all of us will remember her for different things. I will remember her for
being a determined croquet adversary and an all-round lovely person.”
10.09.18 Treasurer’s Tankard From 6th to 10th September, GGCC hosted the 2018 Treasurer's
Tankard, an Association Croquet tournament run by the Croquet Association. There
were 8 players, this competition being a part of 'Eights Week', each entrant playing
each other twice. So the intended schedule was that 56 separate games of Advanced
Association Croquet would be played over a 5-day period.
As the event progressed, it became apparent that the players were having difficulty
with GGCC's hard, fast lawns and very firm hoops. Games were over-running and had
to be 'pegged down' to be completed when possible later in the day. Play continued
until deep twilight every night and even later on the last night.
By the last day, the number of potential winners was reduced to two - John Davis
(Nottingham) and Nigel Polhill (Ealing/Surbiton). By lunchtime, John had won 10 games
out of 12 played, Nigel had won 8 out of 10. John was unbeatable, but Nigel could
tie at the top if John lost his final two games and he, Nigel, won his last two.
One round later, Nigel had crept up to 9 wins and John had lost a game to stay on
10 wins. So to the final round. John lost again in the failing light. Could Nigel,
in the very last game, catch him up? By 8.00pm play was still going on. Martin Murray,
the tournament manager, was giving Nigel a hard game and it was getting darker and
darker. Eventually, torches were employed to give the players some chance of seeing
what was going on and in the most difficult of conditions, Nigel finally broke clear
and pegged out for a win at 8.28pm.
So the result was a tie between John and Nigel, each winning 10 games out of 14.
Manager and players thanked the club's members for all the hard work they had put
into the lawns, the catering and generally looking after them. (MH) (Photos)

a very respectable fifth place. Photographs and a report of the event by Bill Arliss

15.08.18 Townswomen’s Guild Croquet Day This year we had pleasure in hosting thirteen
teams from across the region and for the first time fielded a club team playing hors
concours. The weather was a little cloudy and breezy but the conditions were fine
for a day when 52 games were played. The ‘Jolly Girls’ team of Dawn and Di won the
competition, with ‘Not the Dynamic Duo’, Gillian and Jacky, coming a close second.
We look forward to welcoming them back to the club next year. Results are available

a welcome bottle. (Photo)
08.08.18 SECF GC Handicap League Team B played its final match in the SECF League
against Woking. In spite of recent rain the lawns were still fast and the hoops hard
resulting in yet another interesting outcome. (Match report)
Match result: Guildford & Godalming 4.5 Woking 4.5 (SECF League Results)
18.07.18 SECF U League The lawns were marginally slower after the recent rain but
the teams faced the added complication of very strong blustery winds. Matches were
closely contested but Hampstead managed to clinch the match by one game. (Match report)

27.07.18 SECF GC Handicap League Team A were drawn away to Littlehampton for their
third League match. Travelling to the match and playing in what proved to be the
hottest day of the heatwave it is not surprising that they did not manage to maintain
their previous form. (Match report)

18.07.18 SECF U League The third match of the season was away to Sussex County at

16.07.18 SECF GC Level Play League With huge thanks to Robert B and George R who
stood in at the eleventh hour after a couple of late withdrawals, on paper the two
teams were fairly evenly matched for our away match at Compton in the SECF GC level
play league...and so it proved in practice, with George’s close win in the deciding
game of his match meaning a 4-3 result for G&G. Also thanks to Compton for their
generous hospitality. Team of Robert, George, Mike H and Chris H.
Match result: Guildford & Godalming 4 Compton 3 (SECF League Results)
15.07.18 GGCC Association B-level Weekend Tournament Under challenging conditions
Martin Burger was the clear winner being the only competitor to win all five of his
matches. He was presented with the Frank Rendall trophy by Mark Godfrrey-James. (Link
11.07.18 SECF U League Following a delayed start resulting from an intractable car
boot lock the teams agreed to play slightly shortened games. The croquet was enjoyable
and the hosts, Rother Valley, provided an excellent lunch to fortify the teams for
the afternoon. Rother Valley just had the edge and won the match by a single game.
Match result: Guildford & Godalming 3 Rother Valley 4 (SECF League Results)

of the lawns.
Match result: Guildford & Godalming 6 Tunbridge Wells 1 (SECF League Results)
30.06.18 All England AC Handicap Qualifier After 3 challenging games on superfast

reduced his handicap to 0, recently competed in the British Open GC doubles with
partner Roger Sutton (handicap 0) against top international players. The partnership

Barry Gould on passing the ripe young age of 80 this week. A surprise party was
held at the croquet club for family and friends. (Photos)
Andrea Huxley on winning the B-Level Golf Croquet Tournament at East Dorset CC on
26th/27th May (thereby qualifying for the national B-Level final.
21.05.18 GC Hamptworth Tournament 19-20 May Chris recently participated in a 2-day
GC level play tournament at Hamptworth for handicaps 0 and above. 16 participants
(mostly in the handicap range 0 to +2) were divided into ‘all play all’ blocks of
8. Chris’ score of 5 wins out of 7 was matched by 3 others in his block but fortuitously
the tie break system used (net hoops) meant that he finished top and as such went
through to the main semi-final where he played the runner up from the other block
in a 3x13 point format. Having won the first game quite comfortably, he reports he
lost horribly in the second but managed to scrape through the decider at the golden
hoop, courtesy of the croquet gods! By contrast with what had gone before, the final,
against the top seed and last year’s winner was (to his surprise but not disappointment!)
a bit of an anti-climax where his opponent’s normally impeccable swing deserted him
temporarily and Chris won in two straight games.
12.05.18 Longman Cup GGCC played host to Woking in Round 1 of the association croquet
Longman Cup. Iain G reports that ‘Facing last year’s opening Longman Cup opponents
again we faired only slightly better with the team struggling to overcome their bisque
advantage in all but one match which was the only match we managed to win, well done
Mike. The rest of the team was still not firing properly yet this early in the season.
Nevertheless it was still an enjoyable day against friendly opponents. The weather
started well but by the time of the excellent lunch provided by Jan it had started
raining and continued for the rest of the match. The lawns as usual were in excellent
condition and many thanks to Tony for setting the hoops the previous evening.’ The
team comprised: Iain G, Barry G, John G and Mike T.
Match result: (Guildford & Godalming 1 Woking 6)
06.05.18 The Guildford & Godalming Open Challenge Cup was won by Jamie Burch of
Reigate Priory Croquet Club for the second time having previously taken the trophy
in 2012. Congratulations to Jamie on winning all his games in this weekend Advanced
Association Croquet Tournament. The weather was superb, the lawns in excellent condition
thanks to the efforts of Arthur and Tony, and the competitors demonstrated both their
skill and stamina in the sun. (Photo)
30.04.18 Winter GC Leagues Congratulations to Hilary B on winning the Handicap League
for the 4th time and to Jan H, who came a close 2nd. In spite of the weather the
Level Play League was well contested with a final flurry of play as the deadline
drew near. Congratulations to Ian F who managed to cling onto the lead he established
early in the season and to Mike To and Andrea H who came 2nd and third respectively.
24.04.18 Murphy Shield GGCC played away to Hamptworth in Round 1 of the golf croquet
Murphy Shield. Please follow the link to read the match report.
Match result: Guildford & Godalming 3 Hamptworth 4
16.04.18 SECF GC Level Play League v Sussex County The club’s team had its first
match of the year today against a very strong Sussex County side comprising a -2
handicap, a -1 and two zero handicaps. Perhaps unsurprisingly we came off second
best but did win two of the seven matches with a number of other close games. Despite
the 2-5 scoreline, Sussex as always were very friendly hosts. G&G team was Mike T,
Mike H, Andrea H and Chris H. (CH) (SECF League Results)
15.04.18 One-ball Charity Qualifier A disappointingly small number of members (5)
competed for the club’s One-Ball trophy on Sunday 15 April. The format was all-play-all,
with provision for a play-off in the case of equality after 4 rounds. After those
4 rounds, Audrey and Anthony were tied on 3 wins, while four-time winner Stephen
and Fred (our newest member) had 2 wins each. In the play-off, Anthony beat Audrey
narrowly, using his half bisque to good effect late on in the game. Thank you to
all the players for raising £60 for The Downs Syndrome Association. (MH) (Photo)
07.04.18 Applewood Bowl As has become customary this was the first club competition
of the year. Eight competitors played 2 games of One-Ball and 2 games of 14 point
Advanced Association Croquet. By the close of play three of the contestants had each
won 3 of their 4 games, no one having won all 4. Judging on net points and the quality
of wins Stephen SM was once again presented with the Applewood Bowl by Arthur L who
organised and managed the event. Runners up were Ian F and Audrey P. (Photos)
20.02.18 AGM Mark Godfrey-James, the outgoing HonoraryTreasurer, was thanked for
all he had done whilst in office and was presented with a gift. Mike Huxley and Hilary
Bird were re-elected as Chairman and Honorary Secretary respectively for a second
term of office. Julie Tremble was elected as Honorary Treasurer. Andrea Huxley,
Roseann Sullivan and Ron Piper were re-elected to the committee. There was one vacancy
on the committee following Lynn Edge’s resignation; however, no nominations for this
vacancy had been received prior to the AGM and no one present at the meeting offered
to stand. Any member who would like to serve on the committee was urged to get in
touch with Mike or Hilary. Tony Mrozinski was once again confirmed as President.
It was agreed that a Family Membership category be added to the types of membership
